5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is seeking applications from enthusiastic students who are looking to gain professional experience in the field of finance.

During this internship, the intern will assist the team in IWMI\u2019s finance department in the following areas:

Receive invoices from suppliers and process payments. Payments could be arranged through an online bank transfer or a manual bank transfer. Include relevant journal entries in the accounting system. Prepare fund transfer letters when making payments to local and foreign suppliers and update the payment voucher in the accounting system. Provide support to the preparation of local and foreign bank reconciliation statements. Assist with the preparation of cash flow statements using cash outflow information. Assist with collecting supporting information for the annual audit. Document and maintain complete and accurate supporting information for all financial transactions.

Requirements: Qualifications, exposure and skills:

Registered or part-qualified students with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka)/Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)/Association of Accounting Technicians of Sri Lanka (AAT). Undergraduates or graduates in Commerce/Business Administration/Finance/ Accounting. Excellent command of the English language (written and oral). Ability to comprehend complex written material. Ability to maintain information in a database in a methodical and objective manner. Ability to prepare and maintain reconciliations. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office software (specifically Excel and Word). Experience in using accounting software would be an added advantage. Strong self-motivation while being a team player. Integrity is of utmost importance.

IWMI is an Executive Level (non-public sector) Training Organization approved by CA Sri Lanka.

As an intern in the finance department of IWMI, you will gain a broad understanding of the accounting procedures and processes in an international organization. During your internship, you will understand the role that international donors play in supporting research; have an opportunity to work with an enterprise resource planning (ERP) accounting system (SAP); and be able to interact with staff at IWMI\u2019s headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and its regional offices across Asia and Africa. This will also give you an insight into working with people from different countries and cultures.

The duration of the initial internship contract will be for 6 months with the possibility of extension for another 6 months based on performance, requirements of IWMI, and availability of funds. This is a nationally recruited internship and only Sri Lankans are eligible to apply.
