7 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is seeking applications from enthusiastic students who are looking to gain professional experience in the field of finance.

During this internship, the intern will assist the team in IWMI\u2019s finance department in the following areas:

Checking accounting entries \u2013 general ledger, work breakdown structures, order number and narrations \u2013 made by IWMI\u2019s regional offices. Assist in the processing of payment vouchers and journal vouchers of the regional offices. Checking monthly reports \u2013 month end summary reports, bank reconciliations, cash count and payment reconciliations \u2013 of the regional offices. Follow up with relevant staff and obtain missing documents to complete transactions. Data entry in the SAP accounting system. Assist in preparing invoices for institutes hosted by IWMI. Preparation of relevant supporting documents for regional office fund transfers, including the fund transfer letter, and assist in compiling data in excel worksheets. Any other tasks in the finance department depending on priority.

Requirements: Qualifications, exposure and skills:

Registered or part-qualified students with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka)/Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)/Association of Accounting Technicians of Sri Lanka (AAT). Undergraduates or graduates in Commerce/Business Administration/Finance/ Accounting. Excellent command of the English language (written and oral). Ability to comprehend complex written material. Ability to maintain information in a database in a methodical and objective manner. Ability to prepare and maintain reconciliations. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office software (specifically Excel and Word). Experience in using accounting software would be an added advantage. Strong self-motivation while being a team player. Integrity is of utmost importance.

IWMI is an Executive Level (non-public sector) Training Organization approved by CA Sri Lanka.

As an intern in the finance department of IWMI, you will gain a broad understanding of the accounting procedures and processes in an international organization. During your internship, you will understand the role that international donors play in supporting research; have an opportunity to work with an enterprise resource planning (ERP) accounting system (SAP); and be able to interact with staff at IWMI\u2019s headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and its regional offices across Asia and Africa. This will also give you an insight into working with people from different countries and cultures.

The duration of the initial internship contract will be for 6 months with the possibility of extension for another 6 months based on performance, requirements of IWMI, and availability of funds. This is a nationally recruited internship and only Sri Lankans are eligible to apply.
