Work LocationCairo Expected duration5 days Duties and ResponsibilitiesBackground: The regional version of ATSI developed by ESCWA in 2020 has been calibrated using a modified GTAP’s database 10.0. The original GTAP 10.0 links SAMs for 141 countries and sub-regions of the world in one global SAM. However, it includes only 10 individual Arab countries (GCC countries, Tunisia, UAE Oman and Jordan). In 2020, ESCWA developed a modified version of the GTAP 10.0 database to include 9 additional Arab countries namely Algeria, Mauritania, Libya, Sudan, Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and Palestine using national SAMs developed by ESCWA in the context of its collaboration with its MSs. On the requests of MSs, ESCWA started the development of tailored and updated national versions of ATSI called Global Economywide Trade Simulator Interface (GETSI). Egypt requested ESCWA to develop a tailored version of GETSI including the present features in similar applications to MSs in a first stage and the possibility to develop it further to includes trade in services and climate change in a second stage of cooperation. Based on the discussions between ESCWA and the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the purpose of this consultancy is to hire an expert specialized in barriers to trade in services to assist ESCWA in the two days’ workshop in Cairo planned in May 2024. Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant is expected to undertake the following tasks: • Participate in the delivery of the workshop with a focus on barriers to trade in services and techniques of estimating advalorem equivalent. • Prepare a presentation for the purpose of the respective sessions. Qualifications/special skillsAn advanced University degree in applied Economics or related area is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of Seven years of professional work experience in trade analysis and trade in services is required. Strong experience in capacity building and training on trade topics is required. Familiar with the trade policy in Egypt and estimating techniques of advalorem equivalent is required LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, Fluency in English and Arabic is required. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
