Work LocationRemotely Expected duration9 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesBackground The United Nations Economic Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), a regional arm of the United Nations, spearheads this effort in collaboration with UNECE, ESCAP, ECA and ECLAC. ESCWAโs mandate is to foster economic integration, promote sustainable development, and provide policy guidance and technical expertise across its member States. The sustainable management of CRMs is essential for supporting low-carbon transitions, industrial sustainability, and the regional energy transformation agenda in the Arab region. The project therefore underscores ESCWAโs commitment to integrating global best practices for resource governance, aligning with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The project titled \"Enhancing Capacities in the Sustainable Production of Critical Raw Materials Required for Low-Carbon Transitions\", aims to support Member States in advancing their sustainable production capabilities for critical raw materials such as lithium, cobalt and rare earth elements, essential for clean energy and digital technologies. With a focus on aligning resource management practices with the principles of the United Nations Resource Management System (UNRMS), this initiative addresses the dual challenge of meeting growing demand for CRMs while promoting environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and economic inclusivity. Jordan is emerging as a key player in the critical raw materials (CRM) sector. The expert shall substantively contribute to support ESCWAโs efforts in promoting sustainable resource management in Jordan. Duties and Responsibilities Under the overall supervision of the Cluster Lead and direct follow up from the Project Coordinator at the Climate Change and Natural Resources Sustainability Cluster, the expert would be responsible for the following overall duties, namely: โข Developing a UNRMS-based case study on the sustainable production of critical raw materials in Jordan, ensuring alignment with UNRMS principles and the SDGs. โข Conducting research, analysing data, regional and global trade opportunities, financing mechanisms and preparing comprehensive reports. โข Engaging with national governments, industry stakeholders and local communities to gather relevant information, ensure inclusivity and validate findings. โข Assessing the countryโs policy, regulatory and investment climate for CRMs โข Identifying and integrating best practices for sustainable resource management, circular economy principles and innovation in CRM production. โข Providing actionable policy recommendations to address challenges and optimize the application of UNRMS. โข Contributing to workshops, training sessions and knowledge-sharing activities to disseminate findings and promote sustainable practices to support capacity-building efforts. Qualifications/special skillsA Masterโs degree in Sustainable Resource Management, Geology or Earth Sciences, Mining, Energy, Engineering and Trades, Public Policy, Economics, Social Sciences (with relevance to resource governance or environmental sustainability) or related area is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. At least 5 years work experience in Sustainable Resource Management, Geology or Earth Sciences, Mining, Energy, Engineering and Trades, Public Policy, Economics, Social Sciences (with relevance to resource governance or environmental sustainability) is required. Excellent analytical, research, writing and communication skills is required. Proven record of published items covering the topics of Sustainable Resource Management, Resource Management System, critical raw material production, environmental sustainability and energy transition in the Arab region is required. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English is required.
