Expert individual consultant to support drafting of urban food environment manuscripts

CGIAR Research Initiative on Resilient Cities

Background

Resilient Cities, a One CGIAR Initiative, aims to improve urban and peri-urban agrifood systems by bringing together diverse research streams within a common resilience agenda. Within this agenda, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) is leading a work package on improving urban food environments and diets.

There is a growing body of evidence around food environments and diets, but the literature focused specifically on urban food environments lacks synthesis. Understanding food environments in peri urban and urban areas in key counties of critical concern, such as those where both issues of undernutrition and overnutrition must be tackled, is necessary to provide inputs to policymakers, researchers, and the development community to better support initiatives to improve food environments and to promote healthy diets.

As part of the Resilient Cities research initiative, comprehensive scoping reviews of urban food environments were conducted in eight key focal countries (Rwanda, Bangladesh, Philippines, Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana, Sri Lanka, and Peru). One of these key countries in the Resilient Cities initiative – and a country where IFPRI has long had a research presence and interest – is Bangladesh, a country of 165 million people, 1.8 million of which live in informal urban settlements. IFPRI aims to address the gap in knowledge on urban food environments through the development of two manuscripts, one summarizing results of a previously conducted urban food environment scoping review of Bangladesh, and the other synthesizing results from eight country urban food environment scoping reviews (Rwanda, Bangladesh, Philippines, Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana, Sri Lanka, and Peru).
