The Poverty and Equity Global Practice delivers the following to our clients in support of these critical areas:

โ€ขAdvice and knowledge to help better understand the relationship between growth, poverty, and inequality.

โ€ขDiagnostics to help identify critical policies and multisectoral solutions that effectively reduce poverty and benefit the less well-off, helping to shape World Bank Group advisory, financing, and convening services.

โ€ขMonitoring and evaluating policies and programs to enhance the poverty impact of interventions and inform mid-stream correction.

โ€ขSupport for nationally owned, transparent systems and methodologies for tracking poverty and other welfare outcomes.

โ€ขCapacity-building in countries and within the WBG to analyze distributional impacts of policies and programs and monitor welfare.

The South Asia Poverty Unit (ESAPV) covers eight countries with many challenges and opportunities. They are at different stages of economic development, but all share the common goal of eliminating extreme poverty and reducing inequality.ย ย

The SAR regional data and stats team is expanding its work to include poverty and inequality nowcasts and forecasts that help to understand the impact of economic, climate, and other shocks faced by countries in the region, providing a narrative up to today and for coming years. The result of this work will be used in the Macro and Poverty Outlooks, SAR regional data portal Sardatalab, and analytical pieces. The poverty nowcasting and forecasting will be essential to the bankโ€™s cross-country and regional work and eventually could be expanded for global comparative analysis. It is an important input into the Bankโ€™s efforts to monitor and analyze constraints to achieving the SDGs.

The Data and Statistic team of ESAPV is looking for an Extended Term Consultant at level EC1, based in Washington DC. The duration of the appointment is for 12 months with possibility of extension up to the maximum of 3 years. The position reports to Practice Manager for ESAPV and under supervision of a Senior Economist and Data Scientist in Washington DC. The assignment expects to start in May/June 2024.

Role & Responsibilities:

โ€ขDesign, develop, and employ forecast models (i.e., macro-microsimulations) with low supervision that provide a range of recent and coming-year estimates that capture the effects of rising prices, natural shocks, and others.ย

โ€ขCreate and implement nowcast models by interconnecting microdata (i.e., survey-to-survey imputation) from traditional household budget surveys with LFS, DHS, and time-use surveys to support country and regional work.

โ€ขUtilize the O*NET framework to develop the green jobs agenda in the region.ย ย

โ€ขManage corporate products related to harmonizing household surveys, updating country scorecards, and maintaining and updating global databases.

โ€ขContribute to capacity building and technical assistance to the SAR Data&Stats team and government agencies.

โ€ขCurate knowledge and global standard methodology to the needs of government counterparts and specific country contexts.
