Background: Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. The IRC is on the ground in more than 40 countries, providing emergency relief, relocating refugees, and rebuilding lives in the wake of disaster. Through 25 offices in cities across the United States, the IRC helps refugees resettle in the US and become self-sufficient. Over the past 40 years the IRC has resettled over 60,000 clients in Northern California across the five facilities including Oakland, Sacramento, San Jose, Turlock and Modesto. Originally focused on reception and placement, we provide a range of services including economic empowerment, immigration, youth and food security programs and case management for foreign-born survivors of trafficking.

Job Overview: As the Development Director you will oversee the design, implementation, and monitoring of all efforts to leverage donations of financial, human, and in-kind resources in support of our mission. The specific areas of responsibility and oversight include: donor relations and reporting, co-creating with colleagues at IRC headquarters a new collaborative fundraising structure for individual donors, local corporate and private foundation donors, special events planning and oversight, and local and national communications. This position also directs the development, engagement, and outreach activities for the network of four regional offices and supervises the team of Volunteer and Donation staff in each office. As a member our region's senior leadership team, you will share responsibilities with other Directors for providing effective oversight over regional operations and good stewardship of resources. This is a full-time exempt position, reporting to the Executive Director of the IRC in Northern California.

Major Responsibilities:

The Development Director works in close coordination with the Executive Director to achieve the following goals:

โ€ข Resource development

โ€ข Develop and implement an annual fundraising plan with specific and measurable goals and objectives for development of restricted and unrestricted funds.

โ€ข Work in coordination with HQ-based Institutional Philanthropy & Partnerships team to cultivate national partnerships from companies and foundations based in the Bay Area.

โ€ข Research and steer the networking with private funding opportunities and act as the focal person for the development of new proposals and donor cultivation.

โ€ข Oversee the preparation of letters of inquiry, proposals, budgets and reports to local foundations and other potential donors in coordination with Nor Cal Dev staff and local office leadership.

โ€ข Work with Executive Director on all opportunities to highlight the local and global work of IRC.

โ€ข Work with local programming to identify funding needs and create strategic plans to seek funding support for these needs.

โ€ข Organize annual fundraisers and other special events as applicable.

โ€ข Develop strategy for and execute special, restricted fundraising campaigns through digital and traditional channels.

CA Pilot: In collaboration with HQ Development teams co-create new fundraising structure for individual donors in California

โ€ข Advance Northern California office fundraising priorities across External Relations.

โ€ข Support on design and implementation of the California fundraising pilot and serve as active participant in related working groups.

โ€ข Ensure development of strong corporate donor engagement opportunities that are aligned with program need and donor interest for national and local donors.

โ€ข Serve as focal point and liaison for Northern California to HQ fundraising teams, including facilitating productive discussions on improving cross-departmental collaboration.

โ€ข Community Engagement Activities

โ€ข Provide quarterly impact reports to highlight local accomplishments

โ€ข Coordinate with Volunteer Coordinators across the region to present aligned messaging and to create overlap between volunteer and financial / in-kind support

โ€ข Assist Volunteer Coordinators as needed to provide outreach and networking activities to recruit and educate potential donors, volunteers, and constituents

โ€ข Assist in raising awareness about the IRC and representing the office at meetings, seminars, and forums

โ€ข Provide support and information to leadership and membership of GenR, the IRCโ€™s young leadership group, including logistics and budget assistance as they plan yearly fundraiser and engage in volunteer, programmatic and fundraising activities for Nor Cal offices

โ€ข Guide strategy on refugee voices related activities held at the local level and shared with the national IRC campaign.

โ€ข Communications and Advocacy duties

โ€ข Responsible to create and distribute, with HQ Communications Team support, materials representing IRC Northern California shared publicly with media or other public facing avenues.

โ€ข Coordinate with IRC HQ Communications teams on any media requests and products.

โ€ข Ensure quality production and distribution of communications materials & efforts, including brochures, monthly newsletters, social media and website updates to maintain an active presence in the community and online.

โ€ข Assist in Advocacy efforts including providing materials to bring to elected officials and using social media tools to share advocacy efforts with public

โ€ข General management duties

โ€ข Supervise Community Engagement Manager and provide strategize oversight for Volunteer and Donations Coordinators in local offices.

โ€ข Recruit, hire, train and supervise development-related interns and volunteers, when appropriate.

โ€ข Maintain ongoing communication on status of resource development initiatives and provide timely reports on management issues and concerns.

โ€ข Participate actively on Northern Californiaโ€™s Leadership Team and collaborate closely with management team to ensure efficient collaboration with all offices in the delivery of quality services

โ€ข Other tasks as assigned.

Job Requirements:

โ€ข University degree (BA/BS) required; graduate degree in Development, Nonprofit Management or Business Management, or International Relations preferred

โ€ข Minimum of five (5) years prior experience with leading fundraising, communications, public relations, and other development duties in the non-profit sector required

โ€ข Impeccable attention to detail

โ€ข Experience with Salesforce strongly preferred

โ€ข Strong writing skills required

โ€ข Demonstrated record of foundation and donor relations with successful development of private foundation grant proposals

โ€ข Excellent interpersonal and communication skills: the ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with donors, volunteers, partner agencies, government officials, multi-cultural clients and colleagues on all levels. Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a multi-cultural environment.

โ€ข Experience coordinating multiple partners and consensus building toward common goal.

โ€ข Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (especially Word, Excel, Outlook) and internet research

โ€ข Strong organizational, leadership and team-building skills with ability to promote productivity and efficiency

Working Environment: Standard office environment. Some travel to other regional offices required as well as to various venues for events and for meeting with donors. Availability for non-traditional hours including weeknights and weekends required.
