Organizational context
This exciting internship is a unique opportunity for someone wishing to learn and grow as a communicator working with the leading agency on refugee protection and to sharpen their professional skills. The Communications Intern will be supervised by a Communication Officer, or any other position as decided by the senior management. The supervisor provides the incumbent with regular guidance. The incumbent will have frequent contacts involving the exchange of a wide range of information with colleagues within UNHCR as well as media, international organizations, academic institutions, and private individuals.
The communications unit is responsible for gathering and producing public facing content โ videos, photos, stories, graphic design materials, web stories, briefing kits and operational updates.
All UNHCR staff members are accountable to perform their duties as reflected in their job description. They do so within their delegated authorities, in line with the regulatory framework of UNHCR which includes the UN Charter, UN Staff Regulations and Rules, UNHCR Policies and Administrative Instructions as well as relevant accountability frameworks. In addition, staff members are required to discharge their responsibilities in a manner consistent with the core, functional, cross-functional, and managerial competencies and UNHCR's core values of professionalism, integrity, and respect for diversity.
The position
UNHCR Kenya is seeking a dynamic and energetic intern to join a fast-paced environment, creating content and contributing to external communications from the operation. The ideal candidate will have experience in content production and social media management.
Duties and responsibilities
- Media monitoring โ support with monitor UNHCR Kenya mentions on the media on a weekly basis
- Reporting โ generation of monthly reports under the supervisorโs guidance โ these include the monthly operational updates and briefing kits
- Website management โ under guidance of the supervisor, the intern will update the website with stories and content intended to go out to the public.
- Support with follow-up on administrative and logistical arrangements to organise press briefings and other events, such as workshop and conferences.
- Content production โ the intern will contribute to content production which includes video production, photography, writing, editing, and graphic design support of videos that speak to UNHCRโs work and the people we serve.
- Social media management โ The intern will support the communications team with generating copy for UNHCR Kenyaโs social media channels.
- Website editing โ supporting with the uploading of press releases and webstories on the website.
- Maintain up-to-date filing system for consent forms and other relevant documents pertaining UNCR Kenya communications unit.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum qualifications required.
Eligibility
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
- Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.
Desirable qualifications and skills
The ideal candidate should have:
- Have excellent knowledge of English (written/oral/comprehension) with developed writing skills.
- Ideally have a background in communications, public relations.
- Have strong organization and analytical skills.
- Have excellent communication skills.
- Have proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Experience in Adobe Softwareโs (Premier Pro, Photoshop, and Illustrator) and Canva is desirable.
Conditions
The successful candidate will be based with the team in Gigiri Complex, Nairobi.
The internship is for six months, with the possibility of extension to eight months, and the expected start date is 1 August 2024. This is a full-time role with working hours starting from 8.30am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week).

Allowance: Interns will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
UNHCR reimburses internsโ travel costs to/from the duty station.
