UNHCR teams are in the field in 130 countries, using their expertise to protect and care for millions of people.

The internship will be placed with UNHCRโ€™s Global Communications Service, which sits within the Department of External Relations (DER) and serves departments both within DER and in the wider organisation. This internship is a unique opportunity to gain experience in communication and media monitoring as well as experience working within the UN system.

Duties and Responsibilities

We are seeking a dynamic and proactive team player, with a strong interest in communication and refugee issues, to complete a six-month internship within UNHCRโ€™s Global Communications Service (Analytics team).

The Analytics team provides quantitative and qualitative data insights, research, key learnings and evaluation materials related to UNHCRโ€™s internal and external communications. The intern will assist with research and analytic assignments as well as administrative tasks.

The Communications and Research Intern will be expected to:

โ€ข Independently complete weekly and monthly communication reports. These will span across traditional media, social media and digital engagement.
โ€ข Use our multiple advanced media monitoring software tools to provide data insights to colleagues, teams and sections.
โ€ข Participate in training sessions to develop your data analytics, communications and visualisation skills.
โ€ข Assist in the development of new and ad-hoc reports.
โ€ข Research and analyse relevant media coverage of UNHCR.
โ€ข Assist with updating and administering various databases.
โ€ข Provide any other required support, including administrative support to the teamโ€™s four permanent staff.
โ€ข Support ongoing production and deployment of the Hate Speech project with administrative tasks and project management activities, including organizing meetings, coordinating with key stakeholders
โ€ข Assist a related project focused on misinformation, disinformation and hate speech, including planning and organising tasks, drafting and curating materials, progress tracking and reporting.
โ€ข Assist in the engagement of superusers representative and pilot projects consultants, including the planification of superusers workshops and software support.
โ€ข Research funding opportunities for data innovation and / or misinformation, disinformation and hate speech projects.
โ€ข Draft communication and reporting material for internal stakeholders and external partners on UNHCRโ€™s Hate Speech tracker and related activities. Curate relevant examples of online hate speech towards refugees identified by the tracker and package them for internal dissemination (eg case studies, presentations, reports, talking points).

Essential Minimum Qualifications and Professional Experience Required

The ideal candidate will:
โ€ข Possess a Bachelorโ€™s degree in a relevant field, for example Communication and Media Studies, Refugee and Forced Displacement Studies, Migration Studies, International Studies, Data Sciences or Social Sciences.
โ€ข Have strong research skills including a good understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
โ€ข Be a strong communicator and fluent in English, with advanced writing and editing skills. Additional languages are desirable, but not essential.
โ€ข Have advanced experience using the Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint).
โ€ข Have experience monitoring โ€˜ownedโ€™ channels โ€“ including websites and social accounts.
โ€ข Have a strong understanding of social media.
โ€ข Show a genuine desire to learn and adapt.
โ€ข Have good inter-personal skills, be a keen team-player, be organised and able to take initiative.
โ€ข Experience of researching, studying or working on the prevention of harmful online activities is desirable but not essential.

Language:
Be a strong communicator with fluency in English, which includes advanced writing and editing skills. Speaking Spanish is desirable, but not essential.

Eligibility
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
โ€ข Recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
โ€ข Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.
โ€ข An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.

Engagement as an intern is subject to proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 with WHO approved vaccine.

Allowance
Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive a modest allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
