Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is in the Sustainable Development Section of the Strategic Communications Division of the Department of Global Communications (DGC). The incumbent will report to the Chief of the Development Section. The Development Section promotes the UN's work in the areas of economic, social and sustainable development. Main areas of work include the Sustainable Development Goals (including forests, water, oceans, biodiversity and desertification), sanitation, population, health (HIV/AIDS, malaria, pandemic influenza), gender equality, food security, aging, youth, persons with disabilities and Least Developed Countries. Also promotes the work of the Economic and Social Council, the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, major economic and social reports and communication technologies for development.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Associate Public Information Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

Tracks, researches and analyzes information on assigned topics/issues; gathers information from diverse sources and helps to assess news value and other potential impact, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of information campaigns.

Drafts/compiles a specific type or types (e.g. social media, web etc.), of information products for target audiences, including communications plans, strategies and campaigns, press releases, media packets and reports, brochures, briefings, video clips, newsletters, as well as website and social media content, etc.

Acts as the social media focal point on the SDGs; manages GlobalGoalsUN social media accounts, liaises with the UN system to promote key issues and campaigns; and monitors and evaluates social media performance.

Organizes the clearance, production and distribution of information materials; conducts photo and graphic research.

Prepares, on the basis of official UN documentation and other sources, initials/drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in UN newsletters, periodicals, reports and books.

In consultation with others, identifies and proposes information opportunities, activities and approaches, taking into account the situation/topic and target audience.

Identifies key contacts/constituencies and opportunities for strategic partnerships to facilitate communication efforts and maintains working relationships with the same.

Organizes conferences, seminars, press briefings, interviews, etc.; prepares briefing materials for senior officials prior to their participation in such events.

Represents the SDGs team at inter-agency meetings, briefings of UN Information Centers, external events, and speaking engagements at UN HQ and outside to promote key campaigns.

Responds to a variety of inquiries and information requests internally and externally; prepares related correspondence.

Education

A first-level university degree in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. (Candidates for this position must have passed the United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the G to P Examination. No examination is required for candidates in peacekeeping missions.)

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area. (No experience is required for candidates who have passed a United Nations Competitive Recruitment Examination.)
Knowledge of and relevant work experience in the areas of sustainable development and digital outreach and engagement, including web and social media is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.
