The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

The Associate Director for Foundation Relations is part of the team that leads efforts to strategically develop relationships with and strengthen financial support from corporations, foundations, governments, and individuals to advance the Centerโ€™s institutional goals and objectives. This position reports to the Director of Development and leads on all aspects of the Centerโ€™s fundraising with foundation partners within Strategic Planning Office.

The primary purpose of this position is to develop strategies for and coordinate key relationships with foundations that are interested in underwriting the Centerโ€™s work. In this role, the Associate Director must be able to identify and research potential funders, track relationships with foundations, and oversee the process of developing introductory engagements, concept notes, letters of inquiry, proposals, budgets, responses to peer reviewers, as well as narrative and financial reporting, all in collaboration with CSIS scholars and program staff.

The minimum annual salary for this position is $90,000.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

Strategy (30%):
โ€ข In partnership with the Strategic Planning Team, the Associate Director for Foundation Relations will support the development of organizational strategy for key foundation partners.
โ€ข Manages a portfolio of the Centerโ€™s supporting foundations and engages in cultivation and stewardship activities for funders.
โ€ข Supports Center-wide collaboration on foundation relations, including working closely with CSIS programs, Finance & Accounting staff, executive staff and volunteers, and the Development team.
โ€ข Assists in the recognition and prioritization of organizational funding needs, keeping abreast of institutional and departmental priorities and programs.
โ€ข Ensures that supporting foundations are actively involved in CSIS programs and events, by maintaining ongoing contact and effective working relationships between CSIS programs and grantor program officers.
โ€ข Attends appropriate conferences and meetings and tracks wider philanthropic and international affairs sector news and trends (including funding awarded to peer think tanks and research institutions) to proactively identify new engagement opportunities.
โ€ข Provides regular updates to the Director of Development, Chief Development Officer and other CSIS leadership on the Centerโ€™s foundation engagement, including new solicitation opportunities, new proposals and grants, and upcoming deadlines.
Prospect and Proposal Development (30%):
โ€ข Proactively identifies and researches prospective foundations grant opportunities to develop new funding relationships for the Center; develops engagement strategies, drafts prospect profiles, and engages relevant programs to pursue follow-up.
โ€ข Supervises and/or conducts prospect research and writing efforts; provides feedback and guidance as appropriate.
โ€ข Assists programs in proposal writing and, with administrative support, coordinates the proposal submission process; ensures all proposals meet CSIS standards and policies.
Grant Administration (30%):
โ€ข Manages grant reporting process; assists programs with drafting and submitting grant reports; ensures compliance with all grant reporting and other grant obligations.
โ€ข Oversees the processing and acknowledgement of all grant agreements, as needed, and other recognition and stewardship activities.
โ€ข Oversees the maintenance of grant records, including paper files, moves management tracking, and primary and secondary contacts and relationships in database; monitors and updates the proposal/project pipeline; keeps proposal and reporting deadline calendars.
โ€ข Ensures that all foundation and government-related Salesforce opportunities are kept up to date with necessary documentation, report deadlines, payment schedule, and other data.
General/Events (10%):
โ€ข Leads trainings for program staff on foundations, grant writing, reporting, and other topics as needed.
โ€ข Collaborates with the Director of Development and Chief Development Officer to develop strategies for cultivation and stewardship events, as well as other events for foundation supporters.

โ€ข Bachelorโ€™s degree; Masterโ€™s degree preferred
โ€ข A minimum of 5-7 yearsโ€™ experience in grant writing and fundraising, preferably in a public policy or similar nonprofit
โ€ข Experience working directly with foundations and/or managing institutional partnerships
โ€ข Interest in international relations and policy-related research; ability to remain up-to-date on the research agendas of CSIS programs to inform prospect research and proposal/report preparation
โ€ข Familiarity with major national and international foundations, as well as prospect research resources such as Foundation Directory Online, Chronicle of Philanthropy, GuideStar, Foundation Search, Grant Station, and IRS 990s
โ€ข Salesforce, Raiserโ€™s Edge, or similar CRM database experience is essential
โ€ข Excellent writing and editing skills; very high attention to detail and organizational skills
โ€ข Strong research skills, and knowledge of and experience in using research resources for foundation and government prospects and funding opportunities
โ€ข Strong communication skills, including the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from co-workers, program staff, program officers and grants managers, and the general public; good judgment and discretion are emphasized, as is the ability to constructively give and receive feedback

โ€ข Must possess a professional demeanor in his/her approach and appearance
