Position Overview

The Associate Director, Accounting works with the Director, Accounting/Controller to oversee functions and staff within the Finance departmentโ€™s accounting operations. The Associate Director, Accounting oversees, trains, and supervises staff accountants in their performance of all accounting tasks, including general ledger accounting, journal entries, reconciliations, etc.

The Associate Director, Accounting works closely with and oversees other members of the Finance team to ensure the timely and accurate capturing of all financial activity of the organization, including revenue and expense capture and recognition, monthly close process, allocations, etc. In addition, the Associate Director, Accounting works closely with peers across the organization to strengthen the financial operations.

The Associate Director, Accounting is responsible for the oversight of all daily/weekly/monthly/ annual accounting tasks assigned to their team by established deadlines in order to ensure a timely and accurate monthly close of books for the United Nations Foundation and the Better World Fund (BWF). The Associate Director, Accounting is a trusted member of the Finance department and supports its overall success as well as the success of the entire organization.

The Associate Director, Accounting cross-trains staff, coaches, supports, encourages, and nurtures their professional growth. The Associate Director, Accounting models and maintains a culture of integrity, honesty and excellence.
The Deputy Director, Accounting will report directly to the Director, Accounting/Controller, Finance. The Deputy Director, Accounting should be experienced in all aspects of financial management, including non-profit, corporate accounting, regulatory and financial reporting, as well as development of internal control policies and procedures.

This position is based in Washington, DC (hybrid schedule).

Essential Functions

Collaborate with the Director, Accounting/Controller in the management and oversight of all accounting functions including, but not limited to, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and Account Reconciliations.Oversee the execution of transactions for the appropriate accounting functions (i.e., allocations, open/close periods, execute batch processes, etc.).Oversee team to ensure monthly financial statements are prepared, analyzed, and published timely.Manage the preparation of regulatory reporting including annual and periodic program review audits.Research and address technical accounting issues for compliance.Ensure month-end and year-end close process.Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.Ensure compliance with local, state, private and federal government reporting requirements, and tax filings.Oversee and contribute to the development, documentation, and implementation of business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.Ensure compliance with organization and regulatory standards.Manage annual audit preparation.Develop staff by coaching, managing performance, setting goals, providing ongoing training, and maintaining strong relationships.Maintain working knowledge of the UNF agreement process (for both contracts and grants), and when to utilize the proper templates accordingly. (As applicable to the role)Attend training sessions provided by UNFโ€™s contracts team to maintain and keep up to date with UNFโ€™s current policies and procedures. Bachelorโ€™s degree in accounting, finance, or another related field.9-10 years of progressive relevant professional experience.Professional certification such as CPA, CFM, or CMA preferred.Sound knowledge of financial and accounting processes (e.g., Reporting, financial closure etc.)Solid knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and regulations.Familiarity with USG donor regulations (2 CFR 200 & FAR) preferred Experience with various accounting software.Strong supervisory and management skills including coaching finance and accounting staff.Experience in a non-profit environment preferred.Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.Ability to work under pressure and handle stress.Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy.
