Terms of ReferenceThis JR is raised to \"hire\" for 6 months Mr. Nils Michalke as Carlo Schmid Fellow for 6 months as of 4 September as Assistant Energy Officer within the DFAM Greening and Sustainability Team in Nairobi.

During the fellowship the incumbent will acquire the following:
โ€ข Knowledge on UNHCRโ€™s mandate, programmes and environmental activities at HQ and in the field.
โ€ข Knowledge in key environmental and energy related sectors.
โ€ข Knowledge on the Strategy for Sustainability Management in UNHCR and the UN System 2020-2030.
โ€ข Experience of coordination, information collection and report drafting.

Duties and responsibilities
Assist the Greening and Sustainability Project Coordinators in providing support for the delivery of innovative financing projects and donor engagement.
1. Support the UNHCRs solarisation activities:
a. Data collection and processing for technical feasibility assessments
b. Communication and follow up with Country Focal points
c. Data quality assurance
2. Assist in the development of new and ad-hoc reports on greening, donor reporting and communication content.
3. Support the team on advocating for Greening and Sustainability initiatives.
4. Assist in developing the project visibility, as well as internal and external communication strategies and actions.
5. Assist with updating and administering internal processes relating to the Energy team.
6. Provide any other required support, including administrative support to the teamโ€™s staff.
7. Continuously scan for new and developing information in order to ensure the team is up to date with emerging technologies and processes

Area of work may be adapted during the course of the internship to better fit the internโ€™s interests and profile as well as the Sectionโ€™s needs.
Minimum qualifications required

โ€ข Bachelor university degree is required. Degree or specific studies in Environmental Studies/ Science; Engineering; Economics: Business Administration; Finance; or other closely relevant field.
โ€ข Enrolled in a masterโ€™s degree, preferably in Environmental Studies; Engineering; Economics: Business Administration; Finance; or other closely relevant field.
โ€ข Excellent English oral and writing skills are required. Working knowledge of a second UN official language is an asset.
Desirable:
โ€ข A plus if the candidate is familiar and has former experience with renewable energy systems and their implementation in remote areas

Standard Job Description Assistant Energy Officer Organizational Setting and Work Relationships Access to clean, affordable and reliable energy services is integral part of the humanitarian response and an essential factor in creating sustainable economic development. Sustainable energy services are essential for basic human protection and aim to enable refugees, IDPs, host communities and other persons of concern to meet their energy needs in a safe, sustainable and affordable way, recognizing the critical importance of access to sustainable energy to ensure basic needs, improve human protection and well-being, and foster communities' inclusiveness. Energy services provide cooking, lighting, heating and clean water, and underpin all but the most rudimentary income-earning activities. Energy poverty leads to insecurity, increased risk of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), reduced development opportunities, health problems and environmental degradation. In line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), access to clean energy could vastly improve the health and well-being of millions of persons. The Assistant Energy Officer will provide technical support on sustainable energy in the Operation. The incumbent will work very closely with the technical sectors, Programme and Protection colleagues. S/he will typically report to the Programme Officer in the Operation. Duties - Assist the implementation of the sustainable energy programme - Assist in the assessment and identification of cost effective and appropriate sources of alternative energy for cooking, lighting and electricity in collaboration with all actors, including private sector, development agencies and governmental institutions. - Assist the supervisor in the design of specific projects and pilot energy for cooking, lighting and powering, including renewable energy, with a view towards enhancing self-reliance, education and protection. - Work in close collaboration and assist in the establishment of multi-sectoral links of Energy with Environment, Protection, Shelter and Settlement, Public Health and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. - Support and assist to inform and coordinate with government, line ministries and NGO partners to implement a robust and appropriate renewable energy strategy and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources and ensure safety - Assist in the monitoring and coordination of all sustainable energy activities. - Assist in the identification, establishment and linkage with relevant organizations to ensure access to sustainable energy for both refugees and the surrounding areas - Work in multi-functional team approach and work in close collaboration with programme and other technical experts, to ensure energy based interventions are approached from a cross-sectoral perspective. - Assist the Operation to ensure that minimum best practices are met to assure health and safety standards across all sustainable energy and energy efficient technologies. - Assist in the documentation of the project development including monitoring, testing, trouble shooting, lessons learned and solutions applied to assure institutional knowledge development. - Perform other related duties as required.
