5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

UN Jobs : how to build a career in United nations

Getting a job in the UN is a dream for many people, as a UN job is an amazing chance to grow both professionally and personally while getting priceless experience. Working for the UN, one should expect working in a team of international experts, competitive salaries, and great career opportunities. So, let's have a more detailed look at job types offered by the UN and clarify how to become a part of this powerful organization.

But the main question is “how to get a job at the un” without spending 10 years to achieve this dream ?

How to Start the UN Career

If you love our planet and people and are eager to change the world for better, you will certainly find an ideal job for yourself in the UN. This organization is a huge employer, offering numerous career opportunities not only for experienced professionals but also for those who are just looking for a dream job. Competition is usually fierce, as there are often many candidates for the same position, which is proof that UN jobs are desirable and popular. Nevertheless, it's possible to become a UN worker. But be ready to prepare for it, as it may not be as easy as people eager to start a career in the UN usually expect. Now, let's have a look at the main steps you'll have to do to start the UN career.

  1. Prepare. The best way to start is to browse the United Nations official website to get a better understanding of what you are offered. This may be super helpful for those who do not yet understand what they are looking for. On the website, you will have a chance to get acquainted with a list of job openings, areas, and qualifications required. Information is everything, so be prepared.
  2. Choose the staff category. As we have already mentioned, there are several staff categories to choose from. So, the next step is choosing the category. You should take into account your skills and interests, as well as work experience (it's essential for some jobs).
  3. Make sure you have enough experience and qualification for the position chosen. Understandably, each position has a set of requirements you should meet for your application to be considered. Sometimes candidates don't pay attention to the requirements relying on luck. It's completely wrong, as in this case people just waste their time applying. We'll discuss general requirements a little bit later.
  4. Register an account. Having selected a job, you should proceed to the next step - registration. To register a personal account, you'll have to provide some personal information (like your date of birth, your name, email, etc). You'll also have to provide some information about your qualification. And the last step is to create a user name and a password.
  5. Choose a job and apply. Think twice whether you meet all the requirements not to waste your time for nothing. You can apply for as many positions as you like. Instead using CV, you will need to use forms as UN p11 form (personal history form).  The applying process is not a complicated one, you just have to follow the instructions.
  6. Wait for an interview invitation. Having applied for a job (or several), all you have to do is wait. You will be able to check the status of your application in your account. Be attentive, as only those selected for an interview will be informed about the result.

There are several programs designed to help young people to find a career path in the UN. One of the most popular is the Young Professionals Programme (we'll discuss it a little bit later).

How to pass successfully the interview with HR

An interview is the first step to getting Save The Children jobs. Here are some tips to help you get through the interview successfully.

๐Ÿ“Œ How to increase your chances to get a job?

1. Write a resume, not a job description

It is not enough to simply list all the job responsibilities from previous experience. Focus on the achievements and results of your work, indicate interesting projects and specific numbers.

When creating a resume, avoid templates, but you should not try to stand out in any way - it is important to observe the middle ground. There are many interesting formats - for example, with the help of iconography you can succinctly convey all the information about your experience and skills.

And, of course, it is necessary to monitor literacy and ensure that there is no confusion in the resume, for example, with dates. HR specialists pay attention to this, especially if the position for which the candidate is applying requires attention.

2. Take telephone interviews seriously

Having called you, the representative of the organization will pay attention to your intonation - it is important to show that you are interested in the call. Therefore, you must "get involved" in the conversation right away. Think about where you want to start the story about yourself - for example, for what reasons you are looking for a job, that you would like to clarify about the vacancy. But if you are not comfortable talking, then tell about it, ask to call back later, or note that you will call back at a time convenient for both parties.

3. Learn interesting facts about the company

Before the interview, it is important to study the organization, for example, its social sites (for example, there are the Telegram page and Instagram page) and other general information. But do not say the full history of the organization, cause it will be boring. Itโ€™s better to focus on something specific, on what interests you in the organization. For example, interesting facts or data. This will be a big plus at the interview. A good example will be this - a candidate for a position in the financial sector may touch upon the topic of the company's financial results, which are publicly available.

At the same time, it is important to prepare for an interview, but do not memorize the answers so that they sound natural. In general, the better the preparatory stage for finding a job, the more detailed the collection of information about industries and employers, the higher the chance to find and become part of exactly the company you are dreaming of.

4. Focus on self-presentation

โ€œTell us about yourself,โ€ - often the interview begins with these words of the recruiter. Focus on the most important thing you want to convey. Tell why you came to this company, how it is interesting to you, and how you can be useful. Mark your key skills that are important to the position, and qualities that set you apart from other candidates. If you have worked in many companies, tell HR about your last job, as well as those that you are most proud of. Do not try to tell everything at once - such an opportunity will still be during the conversation.

5. Try to control the excitement

Both young professionals and managers are worried about the interview. But the higher the level of the position, the more important is how much a person can cope with his excitement. Indeed, for example, the head will work with the team, motivate other employees. Try to monitor your non-verbal reactions, and if you are worried, itโ€™s entirely appropriate to say this honestly.

6. Give concrete and detailed answers.

Often companies conduct interviews on competencies: the recruiter asks questions to assess the level of development of the candidateโ€™s important competencies for the organization. For example, it asks to give an example of a situation from your practice where you have shown responsibility or made a difficult decision. Try to answer questions as specifically as possible, give examples โ€” letโ€™s say, of how you interacted with the team, took the initiative, and resolved conflict situations. If the answers are not specific, the recruiter will try to find out this information later, possibly with the help of projective questions.

Answer the questions, not in monosyllables, but in a detailed manner - this is especially important if the position requires openness and communication skills.

But if you still cannot recall an example, or you are asked a question that you do not know the answer to, have not encountered such a situation, it is better to honestly say so. It makes no sense to invent or embellish. Focus on other skills, on your desire and motivation, especially if you are just starting your career. However, if you recall something meaningful during the conversation, you can quite say about it.

7. Be sincere in telling about yourself

An interview is not an investigation, but if you feel that the candidate is speaking insincerely, the recruiter has ways to find out the truth. For example, he may ask a question in different words, return to it several times. If the stated facts or figures are not true, inaccuracies are usually disclosed.

Do not lie about the reasons for finding a new job. Most often, candidates note that the company had no development prospects, and sometimes this is true. But the reasons may be different - for example, organizational changes, the level of wages, relations with the leader or team. You should not speak badly about former leaders and colleagues. But even if there was a conflict, this can be honestly told, and at the same time correctly: for example, the candidate can explain that he did not agree with the leader on an important issue, although he respects his point of view. Again, the more specifics and the sincere answers, the higher the credibility of the candidate.
