Value Chain and Market Development Officer

REF: VCMD/LGFNR/18/25

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Value Chain and Market Development Officer who leads the poultry value chain development activities for the ILRI-SNV RAYEE II project and contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of projects.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org.

Key Responsibilities:

Support and contribute to the design, implementation, and monitoring of the poultry value chain development activities. Collaborate with partners, including private enterprises, poultry-based organizations, and NGOs, to implement the ILRI component of RAYEE II poultry value chain development interventions. Facilitate and support the formation of youth groups/cooperatives and other associations along the poultry value chains. Coordinate capacity-building activities in business skill development, agribusiness, market linkages, business plan, product aggregation and marketing, and value addition. Provide technical support to RAYEE II project partners on value chain development and related issues. Facilitate Market-based MSE development and establish linkages with business development services providers. Facilitate market linkages (local, regional, national, and international) through appropriate approaches. Contribute to forming and developing partnerships and forums among the public, private, and producer sectors. Participate in developing an M&E framework and tools to ensure the measurement of output, outcome, and impact indicators related to the project. Contribute to all socio-economic research activities of TPGS, including preparing survey instruments, training enumerators, data analysis, and compilation of reports. Conducts literature reviews and assists in preparing strategy documents, research reports, and policy briefs to strengthen research and development. The supervisor may assign other duties.

Academic and professional qualifications:

Education:

Masterโ€™s degree in Agricultural Economics, Animal Science, Agricultural Applied Economics, Economics, Development Studies, Rural Development all with relevant experience in poultry value chain development.

Experience:

A minimum of three years of relevant experience. Background in poultry value chain development is desirable

Skills:

Adequate experience in the agricultural value chain/poultry development, including assessments and determining appropriate interventions Demonstrated experience in farmers/youth group formation, establishing market linkages, adding agricultural value, grading, and improving food quality standards. Relevant work experience with youth groups and delivering results, preferably in business development and job creation. Ability to work with different public and private stakeholders and coordinate the work of different partners. Practical experience of field surveys in developing countries and analysis of farm household and producer level survey data Practical training and experience in facilitation training in different workshops Strong quantitative skills in econometrics and agricultural research Fluency in written and spoken English, Excellent skills in using STATA, SPSS, and/or any other standard econometric software

Grade: HG 13

Minimum Base Salary: Birr 42,084 per month

Terms of appointment: This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes a very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus in Addis Ababa. Dining and sports facilities are located on site .
