This position is located within the Translation Unit in the Office of the Chief of Staff of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission Sudan (UNITAMS). The position is based in Khartoum, Sudan. The incumbent will be under the direct supervision of the Head of the Translation Unit and the overall supervision of the Chief of Staff. Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Translator, Arabic will be responsible for the following duties:
• Translates documents, subject to revision, from Arabic into English and vice versa covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by UNITAMS, including political, legal, rule of law, gender, electoral, financial, administrative and technical, ensuring that all deadlines are met, and the quality of translation is adequate.
• Revises translations submitted by other Unit members when required.
• Provides accurate and complete high-quality consecutive/simultaneous interpretation into Arabic from English, or from Arabic into English, as and when the need arises. This includes interpreting during sensitive meetings and meetings with high-ranking officials, press events and conferences.
• Ensures adherence to styles and nuances and identifies any vague technical expressions; Proofread final product to ensure accuracy and idiomatically.
• Identifies new terminology material.
• Alerts the Chief of Unit/Section to the need for staffing resources to ensure that referencing priorities and responsibilities are met.
• Contributes to the definition of individual goals and the yearly performance evaluation of Language Assistants (e-Performance), in consultation with senior staff (Chief of Unit/Section).
• Stands in for the Head of the Unit when required.

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent). A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
At least five years of progressively responsible relevant experience in translation is required.
Experience in simultaneous/consecutive interpretation is required.
Relevant language experience within the UN System is desirable. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in English and Arabic, (both oral and written) is required. Assessment
