5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Mission and objectivesFounded in 1948, WHO is the United Nations agency that connects nations, partners and people to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable โ€“ so everyone, everywhere can attain the highest level of health. WHO leads global efforts to expand universal health coverage. We direct and coordinate the worldโ€™s response to health emergencies. And we promote healthier lives โ€“ from pregnancy care through old age. Our Triple Billion targets outline an ambitious plan for the world to achieve good health for all using science-based policies and programmes. WHOโ€™s Thirteenth General Programme of Work (GPW 13) defines WHOโ€™s strategy for the five-year period, 2019-2023. It focuses on triple billion targets to achieve measurable impacts on peopleโ€™s health at the country level. The triple billion targets are to ensure by 2023: โ€ข One billion more people are benefiting from universal health coverage โ€ข One billion more people are better protected from health emergencies โ€ข One billion more people are enjoying better health and well-being The WHO country office in Jordan has successfully implemented the Thirteenth General Programme of Work (GPW 13) for 2019-2023 and is now transitioning to the Fourteenth General Programme of Work (GPW 14) for 2025-2028. These strategic frameworks guide WHOโ€™s priorities, with a strong focus on strengthening country offices to deliver impactful results. GPW 14 outlines an ambitious agenda to realign global efforts toward achieving the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and addressing critical health challenges through six strategic objectives: Responding to climate change, an escalating health threat. Advance the PHC approach and essential health system capacities for UHC. Prevent, mitigate, and prepare for health risks from all hazards. Address determinants of health and root causes of ill health. Improve health service coverage and financial protection. Rapidly detect and sustain response to health emergencies In Jordan, the WHO Country Office aligns its efforts with national priorities, as reflected in Jordanโ€™s Economic Modernization Vision and the Ministry of Health Strategic Plan 2023-2025, through the COUNTRY COOPERATION STRATEGY (CCS) 2021-2025. Key CCS priorities include: Strengthening the health system to advance UHC. Building health system resilience and emergency preparedness. Promoting health and well-being. Enhancing data and innovation capacity.

ContextThe 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is unanimously adopted by 193 Member States at the United Nations General Assembly, commits all those countries to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 related targets, with Health featured prominently in the 2030 agenda. SDG 3 requires countries to โ€œensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all agesโ€, but the goals and targets are an integrated, indivisible package, and many others have a strong connection to health and well-being. Data is the core requisite for any level of decision making. Achieving the SDGs will require concerted action from a wide range of stakeholders, led by national governments. WHO country office in Jordan supports the Ministry of Health leadership to efficiently lead the multiparters efforts in advancing SDGs, thus Jordan has been marked as the first country in the eastern mediterranean region, to establish a national SDG3 focal points team that consists of members from various government sectors, both health and non-health. WHO lead the collaboration and engagement of UN agencies during the consultations. This multisectoral collaboration to advance SDG-3 is a remarkable milestone in Jordan, resulted in enhanced SDG 3 governance and data generation, that is being adapted by other EMR countries. We anticipate that online volunteers, dedicating approximately 20 hours per week, will be instrumental in helping us carry out this important assignment and contribute to our efforts to document the success story of Jordan in advancing the SDG3 +, to reach 2030 global goals at country level.

Task DescriptionWHO Jordan seeks the help of 3 online volunteers who will work collaboratively with the contact person of the organization to draft a high-quality scientific paper. Among the 3 volunteers, the tasks will be split into 3 categories as follows: a) Literature review for scientific writing: gather needed references, for components of paper such as background and rationale, country context and relevancy, methodology and discussion. b) Support in drafting scientific paper: support the focal point at WHO to draft a scientific paper using the available references. c) Review and content editing: include grammar, relevancy, appropriateness, references, style of writing for publication, in line with the Journal requirement. At the end of assignment volunteers will be issued with a certificate of appreciation from. Online volunteers won't be requested to contact any third party on our behalf.
