In July 2024, the World Bank Group launched the WBG Guarantee Platform (WB GP), a major upgrade to its guarantees business, that will deliver improved guarantee access through a unified team at MIGA as well as innovative new guarantee solutions. These new reforms will help position MIGA to achieve the goal of tripling annual guarantee issuance to $20 billion by 2030.
To meet this goal and maximize its development mandate, MIGA must stay focused on supporting the needs of WBGโs developing member countries, while complementing the activities of other public and private insurers.ย ย To further develop the Agencyโs business and foster innovation in the WB Guarantee Platform across the World Bank Group Institutions in these core areas and to meet the evolving needs of investors in developing and emerging markets, MIGAโs FIGย (Financial Institutions Group)ย Operations Department (MIGOP) seeks a skilled and well-versed finance professional with experience in working with financial institutions to join the WBG GP team as a Senior Underwriter to manage FIGโs client relationships in Europe who invest in emerging markets and develop business opportunities in coordination with the teamโs product development specialists and MIGAโs regional staff.
The successful candidate would bring their experience working in the financial markets towards managing MIGAโs European banking clients and developing new partnerships with a view to surfacing new applications of guarantees across the spectrum of financial products.ย The position will therefore require an excellent technical understanding of structured credit and a broad understanding of each client bankโs operational, capital management and business strategies.ย In support of the WB GPโs ambitious growth plans, and with MIGAโs teams around the world, the individual will assume shared responsibility for building business growth across regions.ย Since banks represent most of MIGAโs guarantee holders, coordination with relevant product and regional teams will be essential.
Duties and accountabilities:
โข Lead MIGA/ WB GPโs European banking relationships with a particular focus on managing the agencyโs Key Relationship Banks in the region with interests in emerging markets;ย โข Be the principal point of contact for institutional dialogue with MIGA/ WB GP, ensuring a two-way communication for organizational, business and policy updates; establishing line of communication between senior management of each institution;
โข Act as engagement coordinator across all relevant products: trade finance, NH, capital markets, structured finance, capital management, while recognizing that there are many points of contact that banks have within MIGA and the WB Guarantee Platform;ย
โข Liaise and coordinate origination work with MIGA/ WB GP FIG HQ colleagues, and Regional Heads and colleagues;
โข Expand the scope of MIGA/ WB GPโs coverage of the banking sector in Europe beyond the global banks to include regional banks as well as non-banking financial institutions;
โข Build and maintain relationships with other key stakeholders including regulators, government entities, investors and capital market firms;
โข Provide product expertise, advice and training, and help others learn and deliver;
โข Co-lead work and initiatives on relevant policies, frameworks, processes and methodologies, and inform corporate decision-making within areas of responsibility;
โข Represent the WB Guarantee Platform in relevant internal and external working groups and conferences at senior level.
Selection Criteria
โข MBA or Masterโs degree in Finance, Economics or related areas;
โข At least 8 years of relevant work experience in a bank, IFI or other development financial institution with a strong existing network of relationships in the banking sector;ย โข Deep understanding as to what drives banksโ profitability, capital needs and business strategies;
โข Client-oriented, but able to balance MIGAโs institutional risk framework with client needs and demonstrating well-rounded business judgment;
โข Demonstrated ability to be collaborative, diplomatic, generous and work across organizational boundariesย
โข Proven ability to foster open discussions across boundaries, encouraging a learning culture and providing a safe environment for the exchange of ideas;
โข Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong ability to describe complex concepts, approaches, and lessons learned in a manner that is relevant and understandable for clients and stakeholders; and
โข Flexibility and willingness to work in different time zones as required in a global team.
