Work LocationRemote Expected duration3 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesBackground: The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is implementing several data and digital platforms to support evidence-based policymaking in the Arab region. As these platforms grow in scale and complexity, it is imperative to ensure that comprehensive user manuals, system administration guides, and technical documentation are developed and maintained to support sustainable use and management of these tools. To support this objective, the Decision-Support and Data Science Division at ESCWA is seeking the services of a highly skilled Senior Technical Writer to lead the creation and refinement of professional documentation for a suite of ESCWA-developed platforms, tools, and systems. This includes but is not limited to platforms related to data visualization, AI-based decision support, national and regional monitoring tools, and SDG tracking systems. Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Chief of the Decision-Support and Data Science Division, and in close collaboration with platform development teams, the consultant will be responsible for: - Developing comprehensive user manuals, administration guides, and system documentation for at least three ESCWA platforms; - Preparing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for technical maintenance and data updates; - Creating visual content such as annotated screenshots, diagrams, and workflows to support documentation; - Standardizing templates and terminology across documentation sets; - Ensuring version control and documentation updates align with new system releases or changes; - Coordinating with developers, data engineers, UI/UX teams, and end users to gather requirements and clarify functionalities; - Preparing summary overviews and one-page quick reference guides tailored to decision-makers; - Supporting the production of multilingual versions of manuals (where required) by structuring content in translation-ready formats. Qualifications/special skillsAdvanced university degree (Masterโs or equivalent) in Information Technology, Communication, Technical Writing, Engineering, or a related field. A first-level degree in combination with additional qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. A minimum of 7 years of professional experience in technical writing or documentation development in the context of software platforms, web applications, or digital systems is required. Demonstrated experience preparing user manuals, system documentation, SOPs, or technical guidelines in the public or international development sector is desirable. Prior experience with UN or multilateral institutions is is desirable. Experience working remotely and collaborating with diverse, multicultural technical teams is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English is required and knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
