Established in April 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a membership of over 140 Governments (see www.ipbes.net) and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Under the overall supervision of the IPBES Head of Communications and the CBD Head of Communications, for their respective tasks, the Senior Global Media Consultant will specifically strengthen IPBES and CBD communications efforts in the following areas: 1- Accelerate the growth of global audiences for messaging through โ€˜traditionalโ€™ media For CBD โ€ข Strategically review and propose ambitious but attainable goals for CBD engagement with traditional media organizations, journalists and influencers โ€ข Design, refine and directly improve operational implementation of the traditional media strategy for CBD leading up to and during the meetings of the CBD subsidiary bodies (CBD SBSTTA-26 and CBD SBI-4) and the 16th Conference of the Parties (CBD COP-16) For IPBES โ€ข Strategically review and propose ambitious but attainable goals for IPBES with traditional media organizations, journalists and influencers โ€ข Propose appropriate tactical media engagement activities and opportunities to meet these goals, while also collaborating with the IPBES media training consultant in analyzing and identifying significant risks and proposing options for mitigation โ€ข Design, refine and directly improve operational implementation of the traditional media strategy for IPBES leading up to, during and after the launches of the nexus and transformative change assessment reports 2- Conceptualize, coordinate and strengthen production of strategic and creative content for traditional media For CBD โ€ข Make effective tactical use of AAAS EurekAlert, as part of the coordinated outreach workflow โ€ข Build upon and use existing strong relationships with key science and environment journalists, editors and producers worldwide, and identify new additions to the lists, to promote and achieve maximum international media coverage for CBD โ€ข Build upon and use existing strong relationships with key influencers worldwide to promote and achieve maximum international amplification of #IPBES11 and the nexus and transformative change assessment report launches outreach, as well as for the meetings of the CBD subsidiary bodies (CBD SBSTTA-26 and CBD SBI-4) and the 16th Conference of the Parties (CBD COP-16) For IPBES โ€ข Working with the IPBES co-chairs, coordinating lead authors and technical support units, build on the approved scoping reports, message โ€˜primersโ€™ and drafts of both the summaries for policymakers and the full chapters of the nexus and transformative change assessment reports, to synthesize, research and craft media alerts, media releases and key messages for all tiers of global traditional media โ€ข Strategically manage the distribution of IPBES traditional media outreach for eleventh Session of the IPBES Plenary (#IPBES11) and the launches of nexus and transformative change assessment reports, inter alia via personalized emails to own large, relevant environment/science focused media database of at least 4,000 relevant reporters worldwide, and via the IPBES media contacts database โ€ข Make effective tactical use of AAAS EurekAlert, as part of the coordinated outreach workflow โ€ข Build upon and use existing strong relationships with key science and environment journalists, editors and producers worldwide, and identify new additions to the lists, to promote and achieve maximum international media coverage for IPBES โ€ข Build upon and use existing strong relationships with key influencers worldwide to promote and achieve maximum international amplification of #IPBES11 and the nexus and transformative change assessment report launches outreach 3- Strategically monitor, analyze and improve online traditional media performance For CBD โ€ข In the lead-up, during and immediately after the meetings of the CBD subsidiary bodies (CBD SBSTTA-26 and CBD SBI-4) and the 16th Conference of the Parties (CBD COP-16), find and report at least monthly about online traditional media coverage of CBD, its top officials and collaborators, and important topics using Meltwater and other similar monitoring tools โ€ข Provide a comprehensive report at regular intervals and when required, with hyperlinks to (or pdfs of) all online traditional media coverage, listing at least each media outletโ€™s name, country of origin, language, circulation/reach data, and an \"advertising equivalency\" estimated valuation of coverage โ€ข Analyse coverage and develop recommendations for improvement For IPBES โ€ข In the lead-up, during and immediately after #IPBES11 and the launches of the nexus and transformative change assessment reports, find and report at least monthly about online traditional media coverage of IPBES, its top officials and collaborators, and important topics using Meltwater and other similar monitoring tools โ€ข Kenya (CBD SBSTTA-26 and CBD SBI-4), and in-person at the 16th Conference of the Parties (CBD COP-16) in Colombia, global traditional media relations and related media conferences โ€ข Develop the traditional media capacity of CBD secretariat staff and facilitate longer-term relationships for CBD with especially top-tier media For IPBES โ€ข Plan and lead arrangements and manage logistics, in person, for #IPBES11 global traditional media relations and the media conferences to launch the nexus and transformative change assessment reports, from 7-19 December 2024 in Windhoek, Namibia โ€ข Prepare management systems and lead implementation of strategic media interview scheduling for IPBES leadership and report authors before and during the launches of the nexus and transformative change assessment reports โ€ข Lead the process to craft, edit and finalise the media releases for the nexus and transformative change assessment report launches during and following the #IPBES11 negotiations โ€“ ensuring meticulous revision of the draft releases to reflect all nuances of any Plenary edits to the draft summaries for policymakers, and to generate the widest-possible reach of both the embargoed and final public versions of the releases โ€ข Develop the traditional media capacity of IPBES secretariat staff and facilitate longer-term relationships for IPBES with especially top-tier media Qualifications/special skillsUniversity degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, media, language, environmental studies, or related field. A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience will be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. โ€ข At least 15 years of professional experience in global traditional media relations โ€ข At least 10 years of professional experience in creating global traditional media strategies and managing global traditional media outreach for UN bodies or similar intergovernmental organizations โ€ข At least 10 years of direct professional experience of traditional media outreach relating specifically to communicating complex scientific matters about environmental issues โ€ข Must have verifiable own global media contact database that must include at least 4,000 active email addresses for journalists, editors and producers who specifically cover the environment, nature and/or science beats โ€“ and personal capacity to effectively distribute media releases, alerts and similar to these contacts. โ€ข Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to write clear, concise drafts in English โ€ข Good organizational and personal management skills, with ability to prioritize work issues to meet deadlines with minimal supervision and adjust to changing situations while maintaining focus on delivery and follow-through โ€ข Knowledge of both CBD and IPBES as well as biodiversity-related matters will be a strong advantage LanguagesFluency in oral and written English is required.
