The Bank for International Settlements is looking for a Senior Business Analyst / Developer (Data and Analytics) to join our Banking IT team.

This role is based in Basel, however, thanks to our status as an international organization, we can hire globally and welcome applications from candidates of all nationalities and located anywhere in the world. Relocation support is available for the successful candidate and their dependent family members.

Banking IT sits at the heart of the Banking Department and supports and maintains business critical trading, financial messaging and reporting applications and supports external trading platforms and their interfaces to internal systems.

Purpose of the role:

The Senior Business Analyst / Developer (Data and Analytics) will take a leading role in the data engineering section of the team, by analysing, designing, implementing, testing, and supporting banking data products. These products enable business-critical decision-making processes and represent a significant area of growth with an increasing strategic emphasis on data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Within the team, this role requires supervision of several data engineers (contractors) and providing direction and ownership over the architecture and implementation of banking data products.

    Principal accountabilities:

    • Performs all aspects of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) related to data products, including analysis, design, implementation, testing and support.
    • Undertakes analysis of business processes and documents business requirements for automation of operating procedures. Utilises specialised business/institutional knowledge and technical skills to support end users in the business area in the development and maintenance of data products.
    • Provides production support for business applications. Readiness to work outside normal working hours during service windows and to provide on-call cover for evenings and weekend.
    • Interacts with the other IT and Security groups in the organisation for systems design, integration, standards and change management.
    • Keeps up-to-date with major technology trends relevant to the business area for input into IT strategy.
    • Liaises with external suppliers in area of responsibility and is involved in negotiations as well as definition of terms for provision of their services.
    • Ensures that resources are used in an effective manner within designated area, in cooperation with Line Manager. Proposes investments to Line Manager. Is responsible for cost-effectiveness within area of responsibility.
    • May be required to lead a project team. Ensures that team objectives are met. May be required to coach and train other business support analyst/developers. Brings staff conflicts to the attention of Line Manager.
    • May be required to be a Product Owner/Manager. Provides strategic direction and takes responsibility for the Software product delivery and stakeholder management.

      Qualifications, skills, and experience:

      • University degree in computer science, information management or related field.
      • Proven work experience in a technical department of a Financial Institution or software provider to Financial Institutions, with good knowledge of financial instruments and/or Asset Management.
      • Strong experience in modern data technologies such as Kubernetes, Databricks, Azure Synapse, Snowflake, Kafka, Hive, Spark, Impala or Elastic.
      • Excellent programming skills in one or more major programming language, e.g. C#, Python or Java.
      • Experience in building data ingestion pipelines for data warehouse and/or data lake architecture.
      • Solid experience in data modelling, design patterns and building highly scalable applications, including real-time systems.
      • Experience working in an agile, DevSecOps development environment utilising CICD and continuous improvement and close collaboration.
      • An excellent team player with good communication and interpersonal skills. Comfortable liaising with and engaging staff across the organisation at all levels.
      • A hands-on, practical approach.
      • Solid writing skills including the ability to write system and user documentation in English.
      • Ability to explore domains beyond current area of expertise.
