We are seeking applications for the role of Professional Officer in the Science Department. The contributions of the Science Professional Officer will span our departments of advice, data, and science. The successful candidateโ€‹ will have a thorough understanding of the European project landscape. They will be competent in science programming and research strategies, research administration and project management, having coordinated one or more large projects in the European Union framework programmes, and have extensive experience in coordinating proposal writing for a whole project. They will be able to demonstrate a strong network of international project collaborators, particularly from ICES member countries, and they will play a critical role in shaping ICES project strategy and its subsequent delivery.

Main responsibilities

Lead and complete ICES project strategy, including ACOM/SCICOM initiatives and communicating at all levels
Identify project opportunities that correspond with ICES strategy and lead on project proposals
Develop and coordinate the overview of pipeline and project opportunities
Develop and maintain an overview of staff commitment and budget utilisation in ongoing projects
Coordinate project processes with other project-related staff in the Secretariat
Lead ICES project contributions and complete project-related activities
Track activities in the EU Project Portal as the ICES Legal Entity Appointed Representative
Lead and support relevant ICES symposia
Perform tasks as directed by the Head of the Science Department, including supporting the ICES network as needed

Qualifications and experience

We seek a Professional Officer who is motivated, organised, collaborative and flexible. Further requirements for this position are:

A higher university degree in marine science, environmental sustainability, economics, social science, mathematics/statistics or similar qualifications
At least five years' professional experience, from relevant marine science research and/or an international organization
Experience in project management, budgeting, and delivery
Expertise in science-related management
Knowledge of the main international maritime, environmental, fisheries and ecosystem related policies
Background in interdisciplinary science, working effectively with multidisciplinary teams comprised of people from diverse national and cultural backgrounds is an advantage

Terms of appointment

The appointment will be full-time (38 hours per week, including lunch breaks), for a four-year contract period starting in February 2024, or as soon as possible. The salary will be at the โ€œP2\" grade, which is based on the United Nations common salary system.

ICES Secretariat staff enjoy privileges and immunities pursuant to the Host Agreement between the Government of Denmark and ICES. The salaries of ICES staff are exempt from Danish income tax and are based on, but not identical to, UN salary grade scales. Benefits similar to those paid by the UN organization are also available for eligible staff members (e.g., installation/repatriation, dependents' education, and home leave allowances). Furthermore, a tax-free pension scheme is available, to which both the employee and ICES contribute. ICES Staff Rules set out the conditions of employment and the responsibilities of Secretariat staff.
