Researcher - Second Austrian Assessment Report (AAR2)

The IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment (ECE) Program is offering a position for a strong candidate who will closely collaborate with co-chairs, authors and chapter scientists of the AAR2, as well as researchers in ECE to facilitate the assessment and management of the review process and stakeholder engagement.

background

The ECE Program is one of the leading scientific research institutions in the domain of integrated assessment of climate change and the systems transition to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The ECE program will contribute to the coordination of the Second Austrian Assessment Report (AAR2), a comprehensive and holistic analysis synthesizing scientific knowledge of climate change in Austria. It will summarize the physical manifestation of climate change over the past century; it compiles scenario data for future changes in weather patterns and extreme events and associated impacts; and it identifies response options and pathways for mitigation and adaptation to reach net zero GHG emissions within the next two decades.

This project is funded by the Klima- und Energiefonds and was developed under the auspices of the Austrian Panel on Climate Change (APCC) and in close collaboration with the Climate Change Centra Austria (CCCA). The AAR2 will be the latest and most comprehensive report in a series of assessments on climate change by the APCC (see https://ccca.ac.at/wissenstransfer/apcc).

tasks and responsibilities

Support the AAR2 co-chairs with scientific coordination and project management. Act as scientific liaison to several chapters of the AAR2, contributing to the scientific assessment within their own area(s) of expertise, ensuring well-coordinated development of the report. Coordinate regular meetings with the early-career researchers supporting the individual chapters of the report (chapter scientists). Facilitate stakeholder dialogue and the scientific review process of the report. Manage the collection and assessment of scenario data supporting the scientific assessment. Support with the compilation of draft texts and management of artwork/figures, glossary and the bibliography. Serve as a contact point for author teams for questions relating to copyright and licensing. In line with the team spirit that prevails at IIASA, the incumbent may occasionally work on other tasks assigned by their superiors, that might not be directly related to this appointment but where the post holder has relevant experience and skills, and/or a shortage of immediate personnel capabilities requires such.

Knowledge of scientific software packages for statistical analysis and data visualization as well as basic knowledge of scientific programming languages (e.g., LaTeX, R, Python, GAMS). Fluency and good communication skills in English and German are essential. IIASA offers an interdisciplinary and international workplace, and the possibility to interact with researchers of different nationalities, with strong ties to a world-wide network of research institutions engaged in environmental systems research. The successful candidate must be able to work in, and have respect for, an intercultural environment, and IIASA core values.
