The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center is seeking an innovative & multi skilled candidate to join its headquarters in Battaramulla, Sri Lanka, as a Research Officer \u2013 Water Data Cloud Analytics.
The incumbent will support water data analytics-related activities on the AWS cloud and deliver diverse project requirements and CGIAR research initiatives within IWMI under the Water Data Science strategic programme. The ideal candidate is expected to bring recent experience in remote sensing, geospatial modeling, and Python development for advancing water data science and applications on the AWS platform. The candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute to other geospatial modeling and remote sensing hydrology research projects within IWMI.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop open-source codes in Python for hydrological modeling and water balance studies, modify/customize existing codes for processing geospatial data, download, and process geospatial data, and conduct spatial analysis regularly.
- Develop custom applications to enhance water management across large spatial scales using machine learning or other relevant methods.
- Manage AWS IWMI account (IAM, console, instance management, S3 bucket setup, back up, and other day-to-day operations); liaise with AWS architect and implement security protocols and other recommendations.
- Work with multidisciplinary teams to implement innovative, remote sensing-based approaches for improved water management across IWMI projects.
- Provide technical support (coding and application development) to researchers in carrying out complex geospatial analysis for various research/management projects at IWMI headquarters.
- Assist in training and capacity-building activities for the tools developed within the Water Productivity/Water Accounting group.
- Perform other related assignments as required.
Requirements
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Bachelor 's degree in remote sensing/hydrology/water resources or a related field with at least 02 years of research experience.
- At least one year of experience in handling large-scale geospatial data on the cloud.
- Experience managing AWS cloud services (Identity and Access Management, instance creation, and S3 bucket setup).
- Proficiency in utilizing AWS Cloud for processing earth observation data, specifically for developing water applications on the cloud.
- Strong background in managing extensive spatial datasets through open-source tools and software.
- Experience in collaborating within interdisciplinary and multicultural research teams.
- Experience in managing AWS cloud services for research computing is required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Strong understanding of utilizing earth observation data for generating applications leading to improved water resources management.
- Ability to interpret Python codes and modify the code as per the requirement.
- Capacity to create story maps and web apps using ESRI technologies.
- Knowledge of generating customized dashboards using Power BI.
- Proficiency in Python, with experience in numeric and geospatial Python packages like NumPy, GDAL, or similar packages for handling geospatial data.
- Basic understanding of geospatial data tools to support water solutions.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the capacity to work in a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional, and multicultural environment.
- Ability to communicate and explain complex issues clearly to diverse audiences.
LANGUAGE PROFICINECY:
- Excellent oral and written language skills in English, including effective listening and strong verbal and written communication abilities.

This is a nationally recruited position and only Sri Lankan nationals will be considered. The duration of the contract will initially be for a period of three years with the possibility of extension.
