The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center, is seeking applications from enthusiastic individuals who are interested in contributing to the activities of the CGIAR Initiative on Foresight under IWMI\u2019s internship program. The internship will be based at IWMI's headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Scope of internship

The intern will provide support to develop a database on spatially distributed water demand for different sectors covering the whole of Africa, within the framework of the CGIAR Initiative on Foresight. This opportunity will enable the intern to work closely with a team of researchers and CGIAR scientists on a range of activities that would enhance their skills in research for development. Through this internship, enthusiastic individuals will be able to gain first-hand experience in the development of large-scale spatial datasets for sustainable water management. In addition, the intern will be included as one of the co-authors for the scientific papers they contribute to and will thereby learn the process of scientific publishing in outstanding journals.

The intern will assist in the following areas:

The intern will provide Geographic Information Systems (GIS) support to the development of the spatially distributed database. Support to create spatially distributed water demand rasters for different sectors covering Africa. These will be published as open access to a specific platform by the team and will be a very valuable resource for water management stakeholders working in and on Africa. Support in the publication of methods and results in scientific journals, to confirm the scientific rigor of the results and the visibility in the scientific community. Work with ArcGIS, including its extension Spatial Analyst, as well as the use of Python scripts.


Requirements

Bachelor\u2019s degree, master\u2019s degree or PhD students who have recently graduated in Geography or any other related discipline. Experience in using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Python and ArcGIS and its extensions such as Spatial Analyst. Excellent communication skills in both written and verbal. Ability to work both in a team and independently. Ability to work in an organized way and eager to provide high-quality scientific work.

Benefits

IWMI will provide a monthly stipend to the selected candidate during the internship period.

The duration of the internship is 6 months with the possibility of extension for another 6 months based on performance, requirements of IWMI and the availability of funds. This is a nationally recruited internship and only citizens of Sri Lanka are eligible to apply. This is a part time internship and the level of effort can range from approximately 20 to 40 hours per week, depending on other external activities of the interns.
