It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. The Knowledge and Innovation Branch of UN-Habitat located within the External Relations, Strategy, Knowledge and Innovation Division, is responsible for leading the development of UN-Habitatโs flagship reports, the gathering and reporting on urban data through its Data and Analytic Section, and the production of cutting-edge knowledge and innovation on cities, the processes of urban development and urbanization and its associated effects. As part of UN-Habitatโs role in monitoring and reporting on the state of urbanization, The Knowledge and Innovation Branch will coordinate regional state of the cities reports working closely with regional partners and entities. The position is located in the Knowledge and Innovation Branch, External Relations, Strategy, Knowledge and Innovation Division of UN-Habitat at its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. Duties and responsibilities Under the supervision of the Chief, Knowledge and Innovation Branch, the consultant will perform the following duties: โข Conceptualize and develop strategy for regional state of the cities reports โข Undertake research and policy analysis on regional urban trends and conditions to identify policy solutions โข Develop a long-term corporate strategy for regional state of the cities reports โข Provide data and research inputs for the preparation of regional state of the cities reports โข Support partnerships with regional organizations and other relevant actors for the regional state of the cities reports โข Support internal coordination and partnerships with regional offices and programs for coherence โข Support regional data urban observatories for regional state of the cities reports โข Support the organization of events on regional state of the cities reports at the World Urban Forum โข Support resource mobilization strategy for regional state of the cities reports โข Organize events at regional urban forums and meetings on the regional state of the cities reports Qualifications/special skillsAdvanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in in development studies, urban planning, international relations, economics or related fields is required. A first university degree with a combination of two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Experience in urban research and policy analysis is required At least two years of experience in sustainable cities, development research and policy is required. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in oral and written English is required.
