Work LocationThe Hague Expected duration3-6 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesOrganizational Setting and Reporting: United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (โ€œMechanismโ€) invites applications for internships starting May 2024 in The Hague, Netherlands. Please indicate your preferred internship period in your application. The Mechanism is mandated to perform a number of essential functions previously carried out by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (โ€œICTRโ€) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (โ€œICTYโ€). In carrying out these essential functions the Mechanism maintains the legacies of these two pioneering ad hoc international criminal courts and strives to reflect best practices in the field of international criminal justice. The IRMCT has two branches one located in The Hague, The Netherlands and another in Arusha, Tanzania. The advertised position is located in the Registry, in the Mechanism Information Programme for Affected Communities (MIP) and under direct supervision of the Public Information Officer. The MIP is dedicated to providing information and support to communities affected by the conflicts of the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia. Through various public information products and initiatives, the MIP aims to raise awareness, promote understanding, and contribute to reconciliation efforts related to the war crimes committed during this period. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in research, public information, and community outreach within the context of international criminal justice. Responsibilities: Interns will work in close collaboration with all MIP staff and provide timely support and contribution to the implementation of the different communications projects. Interns are expected to undertake the following duties: โ€ข Conducting research in the ICTY/IRMCT database โ€ข Assisting with and contributing ideas for producing public information products such as videos, social media posts, and online exhibitions โ€ข Assist with social media communication and awareness-raising campaigns โ€ข Drafting correspondence, newsletters, news items, brochures, talking points, and presentations related to the legacy of the ICTY โ€ข Attending meetings and preparing meeting minutes โ€ข Assisting in the organisation of events such as in-person and online lectures, workshops, and trainings โ€ข Performing any other duties as required Qualifications/special skillsTo qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent) (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree (Master Degree) or equivalent, or higher) Previous experience in an administrative work environment is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the Mechanism. Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian languages is desirable. Additional InformationPlease note internships are unpaid. Mechanism interns are responsible for all internship related expenses that they incur. Interns must therefore be able to cover their costs of travel, insurance, accommodation, as well as living expenses during the internship period. Therefore, upon award of an internship, interns are responsible for securing adequate insurance coverage and are required to sign and return a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of these conditions of service. Interns must keep confidential any and all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and not publish any reports or papers based on such information except with the explicit written authorization of the Chief of Human Resources of the Mechanism. Interns are bound by the same duties and obligations as staff members, and the information to which an intern has access in the course of the internship must not be divulged to external parties. Each prospective intern must sign the Acceptance and Undertaking Form to indicate their understanding and acceptance of this stipulation. There should be no expectation of employment by the United Nations or the Mechanism upon completion of the internship.
