Under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the WorldFish Senior Scientist based in Lusaka the Research Analyst (RA) will provide assistance in carrying out literature reviews, data collection and cleaning, analysis and scientific writing under the Programme for Improving Fisheries Governance and Blue Economy Trade Corridors (PROFISHBLUE) project. The Research Analyst will also be involved in field activities as well as other administrative tasks around the office. Through this experience, she/he will learn about the types of data generated in fisheries and aquaculture, how to utilize this data to implement quality research and write publishable papers and reports. The Research Analyst will be required to work long hours including weekends when need arises.

The Successful Candidate will

Participate in GIP activities including fish tagging, feeding, grow out and harvesting activities. Coordinate data collection and data cleaning activities. Conduct quantitative and qualitative synthesis and analysis of research data. Actively participate and be the liaison in production of knowledge products for government and stakeholders, project reports for donors and provide input to scientific publications. Conduct literature reviews on various aquaculture and fisheries themes such as genetic improvement. Coordinate the collection of other types of data including monitoring data that may be required during project implementation. Perform administrative tasks such as procurement of materials and equipment required for the program. Participate in project/ program planning and implementation meetings including those at country level. Carrying out other duties as determined by the Project Leader and or Fish Breeding and Research Platform Manage

Requirements

This job might be for you if you have the below skills and qualifications:

A Bachelor\u2019s or Master\u2019s degree in animal/Fish genetics, Aquaculture, Fisheries, Agri-Business or related field. A PhD in Aquaculture or related program will be added advantage. At least two (02) years of research experience in aquaculture research with emphasis in genetics. Hands on experience in genetic improvement programs and associated activities including Fish tagging, family production, tissue sampling and processing for downstream genetic analyses. Strong research methods and bioinformatics skills. Proficient in data collection and management and scientific writing. Demonstrated ability to analyze quantitative and qualitative data to a high standard. Familiarity with statistical software such as R, STATA, SPSS Familiarity with population and quantitative genetics software including ASREML, Echnida etc. Knowledge in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, GPS etc. Experience in developmental programs relating to aquaculture/ fisheries including research methods. Proficient in English language both verbal and written. Evidence of previous report/ publications done will be of added advantage.

Our Offer

The position will be based in Lusaka, Zambia. Interviews are expected to begin in September 2023. Only shortlisted candidates will be notified and expected to attend the virtual interview session. The successful candidate should be available to commence as soon as possible for an initial of one (01) year fixed-term contract, with the possibility of contract renewal depending on performance and funding situation.
