The UNOWAS mandate covers all countries in West Africa and the Sahel. The Protocol Officer will report to the Head of Mission. ResponsibilitiesUnder the overall supervision of the Head of Mission, the Protocol Officer is responsible for performing the following duties: • Advises and assists the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG)/Head of Mission and Senior Mission officials on protocol and liaison issues; • Handles protocol processes in preparation and follow-up to the SRSG's travels and missions; • Accompanies the SRSG and Senior Mission officials on official travel when needed to guarantee effective liaison and to address any protocol concerns; • Assists in ensuring diplomatic privileges and immunities are accorded to the SRSG and Senior Mission officials in the host country and while travelling on official business; • Coordinates and ensures protocol arrangements are in place for the SRSG and Senior Mission officials for attendance at events organized by UNOWAS or externally; • Assists with the preparation of national and regional conferences and similar events hosted by UNOWAS; • Assists in the planning, coordinating and organizing of hospitality and other events during high-level visits to Dakar; • Maintains communication and facilitates protocol and liaison services with the host country authorities and embassies; • Arranges and coordinates meetings between UNOWAS officials and national authorities in all countries covered under the UNOWAS mandate as needed; • Maintains up-to-date biographical and contact information on national authorities in all countries under the purview of UNOWAS, as well as contact lists for host-country embassies, intergovernmental organizations and UN entities; • Prepares Notes Verbales and related correspondences and assures their follow up; • Assists and advises mission personnel on entry and extension visas; • Performs other duties as required.
