This position is located in the Global Compact Office, New York. The incumbent reports to the Senior Programme Officer, Governance and Sustainability.

The United Nations Global Compact is the United Nations' voluntary corporate sustainability initiative in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption. It revolves around ten universal principles drawn from four key international instruments in these areas. The Global Compact Office is the United Nations entity responsible for the overall management and coordination of the Global Compact initiative. It pursues two complementary objectives: (1) making the Global Compact and its principles part of business strategy and operations everywhere; and (2) facilitating cooperation among key stakeholders by promoting partnerships and collective action in support of United Nations, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, and under the guidance of the Senior Programme Management Officer, Governance and Sustainability, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

โ€ข Participates in the strategic planning, policy development, and implementation of the United Nations Global Compact Officeโ€™s programme related to government relations and resource mobilization; coordinates, monitors and analyzes the Global Compactโ€™s broader programme portfolio by coordinating with other colleagues in all aspects of development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.

โ€ข Coordinates activities related to budget and funding and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.).

โ€ข Performs consulting assignments, in collaboration with relevant issue area by planning meetings internal parties and external stakeholders, and by developing action plans of cross-functional collaboration for key internal and external stakeholders.

โ€ข Prepares written outputs, assists to draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, and other knowledge product development materials.

โ€ข Provides substantive support to building alignment and coordinating input for substantive messaging, including proposing agenda topics, developing specific intelligence and narratives across the programme of work, identifying crossover among issue areas.

โ€ข Undertakes outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.

โ€ข Oversees all relevant work to ensure consistency and cohesiveness across all programmes and initiatives, this includes provision of guidance to issue teams, key partners and other parties.

โ€ข Performs other duties as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Masterโ€™s degree or equivalent) in business administration, management, economics or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

Experience in project/programme management, or project/programme administration or related area is required

Experience in resource mobilization is required.

Experience in coordinating and supporting multi-stakeholder or inter-agency initiatives is desirable.

Experience forging strategic partnerships with governments and civil society is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

โ€ข This position would be temporarily available for a period of six months with possibility of extension. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

However, a current staff member who holds an appointment at the G-6 or G-7 level may also apply to temporary positions in the Professional category up to and including the P-3 level, subject to meeting all eligibility and other requirements for the position. In accordance with ST/AI/1999/17 section 2.3, an SPA may only be granted to one level higher than the personal level of the staff member assigned to higher-level functions in his or her own category, whether the higher-level functions are one or several levels higher than the personal level of the staff member. Staff in the General Service and related categories temporarily placed against a post at the Professional level may receive an SPA to the P-1 or P-2 level.
