The IUCN North America Regional Office (IUCN NARO) is located in Washington D.C. and is home to senior leadership of IUCNโs global program teams (including Climate Change, Economics, Forests, Oceans, Human Rights and Gender) as well as NARO staff responsible for supporting the 170 IUCN Members across North America and driving conservation strategy and policy in the region. The North America Office has built strong relationships with U.S. funders โ including government agencies, charitable foundations, and philanthropists โ to support the work of IUCN and its partners and Members worldwide. JOB DESCRIPTION IUCN North America Regional Office is seeking a Program Intern through May 15, 2025, to support the activities of the IUCN North America Regional Office (IUCN NARO).
The Intern will contribute to two core areas of work: 1) Supporting IUCN NARO Action Circles, and 2) Supporting IUCN NARO Communications.
1) Supporting IUCN NARO Action Circles:
The Intern will provide support to IUCN Members in the United States as they coordinate in advance of the 2025 World Conservation Congress. IUCN NARO seeks to create and sustain a new initiative of thematic working groups of IUCN Members (or โAction Circlesโ). Actions Circles are groups of IUCN Member organization representatives that come together to advance work across thematic topics of relevance in the region. These themes may include but are not limited to: 30x30 Conservation Action, Nature Crime, Landscape Connectivity, Education, Youth, Human Rights and Climate Change, and more.
Action Circles will serve a variety of functions throughout the year in the lead up to IUCNโs World Conservation Congress in October 2025. These functions may include coordinating IUCN Members around new proposed motions through January 15, supporting Members on joint areas of work and joint funding proposals, coordinating Member planning around thematic areas in preparation for their participation in the 2025 WCC, and more.
The Intern will support the coordination of Action Circles, provide communications support for members of Action Circles, and serve as liaison between IUCN NARO and Action Circles. The Internโs role may include:
Maintaining a database of Action Circle Members and Leads;
Supporting Action Circle Leads to draft workplans;
Liaising between Action Circle Members and the IUCN Motions Working Group as Action Circles contribute to motions drafting;
Supporting communications efforts to IUCN Members about the work of Action Circles;
Supporting Action Circles to schedule meetings;
Responding to inquiries from IUCN Members regarding the thematic work of Action Circles;
2) Supporting IUCN NARO Communications
The IUCN North America Regional Office has occasional communications and content needs that the Program Intern will support. These include, but are not limited to:
Publishing Member news and events on the website of the IUCN US National Committee (WordPress, website for US Members);
Updating and publishing articles and content on the North America Regional pages of the IUCN website (Drupal).
Publishing materials on the IUCN-US website (WordPress);
Publishing occasional social media content (LinkedIn).
Supporting the IUCN NARO Regional Director, Philanthropy Advisor, and Member Focal Point as necessary with communications needs.
This is a paid, part-time internship with $750 per month stipend (20 hours per week)
REQUIREMENTS โข Candidate must be a current student, pursing an undergraduate or graduate degree in a related field. If the candidate is pursuing an undergraduate degree, must have completed at least the first two years.
โข Familiarity with IUCN structure, Members, and policy processes - including Motions development - would be an asset.
โข Background and/or experience working in communication, community management, administration, or any other related field will be an asset.
โข Experience using WordPress and Drupal.
โข Fluency in written and spoken English.
โข Strong motivation and interpersonal skills; excellent communication.
โข Authorization to work in the United States.
