INTERNSHIP OFFICE BACKGROUND:ย
UNDP Rwanda is embarking on a new strategic phase with the rollout of its Country Programme Document (CPD) for 2025-2029. Fully aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2025-2029, the CPD is designed to support Rwanda's National Strategy for Transformation (NST2) and Vision 2050. It focuses on two transformative pillars: (i) Environment and Economic Transformation, emphasizing nature-positive and climate-resilient solutions, and (ii) Transformational Governance.
The CPD aligns with Rwandaโs Vision 2050, which aspires to transition the country into a high-income, climate-resilient, and carbon-neutral economy. Despite Rwandaโs impressive socioeconomic progressโsuch as a 119% increase in its Human Development Index between 1990 and 2018, the highest growth rate globallyโchallenges remain. These include multidimensional poverty, persistent inequality, high unemployment (16.8%), and systemic opportunity gaps. Additionally, nearly 38.2% of the population lives below the poverty line, with 16% in extreme poverty, and almost half experience multidimensional poverty, disproportionately affecting women, youth, rural communities, and other vulnerable groups. Reliance on climate-sensitive sectors, such as agriculture and energy, further heightens vulnerability to climate shocks.
To address these challenges, the CPD prioritizes integrated and inclusive approaches aimed at fostering inclusive economic growth, enhancing resilience, and empowering vulnerable populationsโparticularly women, youth, and informal workersโwhile strengthening governance systems to drive sustainable development.ย
