I. Purpose of Assignment

Within the framework of the current UNICEF Europe and Central Asia Regional Office (ECARO) work plan, the overall purpose of the assignment is to assist the UNICEF staff working in emergencies. The incumbent will support the UNICEF Europe and Central Asia Regional (ECAR) Office to assist UNICEF country offices to better prepare and respond to emergencies, in line with UNICEF's mandate and its Core Commitments for Children. In particular, s/he will contribute to the effective management of UNICEF's programming, coordination, and monitoring and reporting for the refugee and migrant response in Europe and the COVID response in ECAR.

II. Tasks

- Support in the implementation of regional preparedness plan 2021. This includes updating/maintaining existing preparedness mechanisms in place at the regional office, updating the regional risk calendar based on INFORM, country office risk analysis and other open data sources to trigger early warning mechanisms, coordinate country calls to alert/inform country offices, taking minutes and follow up on preparedness actions

- Monitor the status of country preparedness plans in the global Emergency Preparedness Platform (EPP), support in the roll out of new version of EPP to country offices, facilitate to provide technical support from the regional office. This includes identifying any pending issues and gaps relative to preparedness planning and monitoring of RO EPP tracker.

- Support in coordinating virtual trainings on Emergency Preparedness and Response and Core Commitments for Children in Humanitarian Action. This will entail mapping of training needs based on the request in EPP, mapping country capacity, supporting in development of resource materials and developing training reports.

- Assist with the preparation of briefing notes, situation reports, funding appeals, donor reports as per the need of section. This would require tracking deadlines, editing country office inputs, compiling consolidated reports and liaising with CO focal points for any required clarifications.

- Contribute to enhance knowledge management in humanitarian action by supporting country offices to document good practices on emergency preparedness, disaster risk reduction, climate action, supporting to organize emergency network meeting, quarterly calls and identifying topic for knowledge exchange/quarterly calls based on feedback/monkey survey received from country offices.

- Any other task that may be requested by the supervisor.

III. Supervision

The intern will work under the guidance and supervision of the UNICEF Emergency Specialist, in accordance with the standards, norms and procedures of UNICEF.

IV. Conditions of Service

The intern will work either part-time or full-time (depending on the intern's academic schedule) at the UNICEF ECARO for a duration of minimum 6 weeks (full time) of up to 6 months. Interns will be provided with a stipend to help cover the cost of lunch and transportation expenses within Istanbul. If interns are not based in Istanbul, they should be ready to cover all other expenses such as travel to the duty station, accommodation, meals and any additional costs above and beyond the stipend. Interns without Turkish nationalities or residence permits are personally responsible for obtaining necessary visa for the whole duration of the internship. Office might only support with the NV for the visa application if needed.

UNICEF accepts no responsibility for the medical insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during the internship. Interns have to demonstrate a proof of medical insurance prior to the beginning of the internship.

The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNICEF but to complement an intern's studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.

V. Eligibility

- To be considered for an internship with UNICEF, applicants must meet the following requirements: be enrolled in a degree programme in an undergraduate (Applicants must be at least 18 years old) or graduate school, or be a recent graduate (Applicants who have graduated within the past two years are considered recent graduates);

- Have strong academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records or, if not available, a reference letter from an academic supervisor;

- Have no immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office; and

- Have no other relatives in the line of authority which the intern will report to (If an applicant has other relative(s) who work(s) in any UNICEF offices, the applicant must disclose this information to the hiring UNICEF office to enable the office to identify and mitigate any conflict of interest before finalizing the internship)

VI. Required Skills and Experience

- Be enrolled in or graduate from development studies, public administration, statistics, gender studies, political science, international law, human rights law or a related field,

- Strong interest in human rights, especially child rights, international humanitarian response system and disaster management,

- Knowledge and understanding of human rights mechanisms and of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and CEDAW,

- Understanding of research methods and processes, report and proposal writing and data analysis;

- Prior experience in the work environment of an international agency, NGOs, UN, or international institutions would be desirable,

- Excellent computer literacy (Microsoft Office products),

- Fluency in spoken and written English.
