Network Administrator

the role
The Network Administrator will be a member of the instituteโs ICT department, reporting directly to the ICT Head. The incumbent will be part of the operations team that provides design, deployment and support for network-related devices, systems, and services on IIASA on-premises and cloud infrastructure. The team also manages heterogeneous environments and generates metrics related to performance, capacity, availability, and failure rates. The network administrator is a hands-on technical role.
main duties and responsibilities
- Propose, design, plan, implement and review network solutions to improve the institute's operations.
- Develop, review and update network documentation.
- Plan and execute performance analysis, proactive troubleshooting, and capacity planning for network platforms/solutions.
- Perform monitoring and maintenance of the overall network environment.
- Participate in security incident handling and contribute to root-cause analysis.
- In line with the team spirit that prevails at IIASA, the incumbent may occasionally work on other tasks assigned by their superiors, that might not be directly related to this appointment but where the post holder has relevant experience and skills, and/or a shortage of immediate personnel capabilities requires such.
required skills
- Academic qualification in IT/Computer Science or other relevant subject.
- Extensive hands-on experience with:
- IT Network Management and network protocols,
- Switches (Cisco), Access points (Meraki), Routers, Firewalls (Fortigate), Web Application Firewalls (Big-IP), and Traffic Managers/Load balancers,
- L2/L3 Network technologies and IPv4 and IPv6 networks (Spanning Tree, QOS, LACP, 802.1x),
- Network performance, security monitoring diagnostic and analytics tools,
- Linux command line tools and shell scripting.
- The ability to handle multiple complex tasks in a dynamic environment, while paying careful attention to accuracy and detail.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills in English (German language skills are advantageous).
- Excellent organizational, time management, problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Advantageous (but not compulsory):
- Understanding of routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF.
- Experience with cloud networking e.g., Azure, Kubernetes CNIs with Calico, Multus, Flannel etc..
appointment terms
The selected candidate should be available to take up the position in October 2023. We offer an initial fixed-term, one-year, full-time (40 hours per week) employment contract, with the intention to extend to an open ended contract thereafter. Eligible applicants wishing to work part-time hours may also be considered.
This position is classified as a ''Professional\" level post.
Duties will be carried out at the IIASA premises in Laxenburg, near Vienna in Austria (up to 100 days per year home office working in Austria possible).
We offer:

A gross full-time (40 hours per week) annual salary of at least EUR 49,694.00 which is exempt from income tax in Austria.
IIASA salaries are negotiable, based on the qualifications, skills and experience of the selected individual.
