Job Description

Your responsibilities

The Engineering Department (EN) pushes forward the limits of technology to provide innovative research tools to the physics and engineering worldwide community. The position is opened in the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) Group, which owns, maintains and develops the 40 years old know-how on the mechanical design, manufacturing and assembly of accelerator and detector devices.

As a Mechanical Fabrication Engineer in the Fabrication and Subcontracting Section (MME-FS), you will participate in the preparation of fabrication of components relying on a wide range of technologies, including state-of-art machining, forming and welding, either internally in one of the Group's workshops or externally through subcontracting in industry. The activities will focus on the construction of mechanical systems for radiofrequency crab cavities and related auxiliaries for the HL-LHC project.

Are you passionate about fabrication using state-of-the-art technologies? Are you skilled in both manufacturing techniques and mechanical design? Then this is an opportunity for you: you will be part of a multidisciplinary team creating a large variety of equipment and components used at CERN, in the framework of a wide range of research and development projects. CERN, take part!

As Mechanical Fabrication Engineer, you will:

Follow up fabrication projects of RF mechanical components for the High Luminosity Project;Discuss with project stakeholders (such as design office) and participate to the identification of the make-or-buy strategy to decide what will be fabricated via CERN production facilities or via industrial partners;Prepare the fabrication planning in agreement with relevant stakeholders and follow-up internal fabrication;Lead activities propaedeutic for fabrication, such as defining and procuring suitable raw materials, prepare fabrication sequences including QA-QC;Manage subcontracted productions via external firms;Participate to the assembling of the equipment.

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge

Experience with 3D and 2D technical drawings: ability to read/interpret technical drawings and ISO GPS tolerancing (dimensional and geometrical product specification standards);Knowledge and application of fabrication methods and work preparation;Knowledge of metallic and non-metallic materials;Experience with CAD tools (preferably CATIA) would be an asset;Initial experience in mechanical components assembly, good understanding of fabrication techniques and their application to the design process;Initial experience with quality management processes: knowledge of quality control procedures and standards applicable to mechanical production such as metrology, NDT;Knowledge of mechanical fabrication in the following domains would be a strong asset: pressure vessels, vacuum chambers, cryogenics;Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State. You have a professional background in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) and have either: a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
