5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Company DescriptionAt CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you an experienced mechanical engineer specialised in design, construction and integration of complex infrastructure and particle physics detectors? Are you interested in the development of innovative systems, involving novel concepts, materials and extremely challenging requirements?

As a member of the CMS Technical Coordination team you will help plan, develop and integrate the infrastructure required for the Phase-II upgrades of the CMS detector. This includes preparing for new flagship subsystems that operate dry and cold (around -35 degrees C) and that require new power, control, readout and safety systems.

Functions

As Mechanical Engineer in the EP-CMX-SCI section, working within the CMS Technical Coordination team, you will:

Take a leading role in the design, installation and commissioning of the infrastructure networks, for several advanced detectors, at surface test facilities and the CMS experimental cavern. In particular, you will focus on the environmental control systems for detectors operating at sub dew-point temperatures. Write up technical specifications and reports. Participate in the design, installation, procurement, and commissioning of detector services in the CMS experimental area and on the CMS detector. Be a key member of the CMS Technical Coordination team interfacing to the sub-detector groups, leading commonly executed engineering projects in the framework of the CMS Upgrade Program, in particular focussing on CO2 evaporative cooling systems and gas systems. Ensure technical specifications and planning are implemented and followed by other CERN groups and departments as well as by suppliers. Supervise graduates and students.

Qualifications

Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering or a related field.

Experience:

Demonstrated experience in design of fluidic system (for cooling and/or process gas): process & Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID), selection of components, functional and fault analysis.Demonstrated experience in developing mechanical assemblies with 3D CAD tools (CATIA is a plus).Initial experience in writing technical specifications, planning and coordinating the fabrication, qualification and installation of mechanical systems or detectorsโ€™ infrastructure.Initial experience in writing functional analysis of control systems would be a plus.

Technical competencies:

Simulation, design and development of infrastructure for detectors or experimental facilities.Knowledge and application of numerical modelling in fluid mechanics and/or heat transfer.Integration of mechanical systems: capability to develop and validate manufacturing and installation methods.Assembly and integration of infrastructure for detectors or experimental facilities.Design, construction, operation and maintenance of detector gas distribution systems.

Behavioural competencies:

Working in teams: understanding when teamwork is required to achieve the best results; including others accordingly and sharing information.Demonstrating flexibility: actively participating in the implementation of new processes and technologies.Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.Communicating effectively: expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point.Solving problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them; finding the information needed to solve problems; making objective judgments based on all the facts available; producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements.
