Description
Lunar Gateway Human System Integration Engineer in the I-HAB Baseline, Verification and AIT Team, Lunar Exploration Group, Directorate of Human and Robotic Exploration Programmes, assigned as integrated support from the Systems Engineering Division, Systems Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.
The Lunar Gateway Human System Integration Engineer will contribute to the development of the hardware, software and functional design of the ESA Gateway modules (I-HAB and ESPRIT), ensuring that human factor aspects and interface requirements are part of each equipment/sub-system/system design, including the crew systems.
The objectives of this post are to:
โข ensure the implementation of anthropometry, human system integration (HSI) and crew system requirements in the ESA Gateway modulesโ design baseline, which is traceable throughout all levels and design stages;
โข coordinate the hardware, software and functional implementation of HSI requirements across and within all subsystem designs, resulting in safe and effective crew activities, as well as enabling the flawless integration of crew systems into the modulesโ architecture;
โข establish the I-HAB and ERM HSI design, development and integration, verification and validation planning for the ESA Gateway modules and coordinate its implementation. This applies to nominal, contingency and maintenance crew activities inside I-HAB and ERM;
โข ensure industryโs implementation of the agreed planning and closeout requirements;
โข support the Gateway team for aspects related to the sparing and logistics of the ESA Gateway modules, as well as the related inventory management complementing the NASA Gateway logistics programme.
Duties
Your tasks and responsibilities will include:
- acting as a focal point vis-ร -vis industry and partners (mainly NASA and JAXA) for:
- HSI aspects and related activities as per Gateway requirements GP10017;
- crew system design and interfaces with the ESA Gateway module design;
- Gateway Working Groups and Boards for human factor, human system integration and crew systems requirements and related aspects;
- intra- and extravehicular crew interfaces and related mobility aids;
- logistics and maintainability aspects of the ESA Gateway modules, physical mock-ups and GSE.
- conducting and supporting design and technical trade-offs among system engineering domains, taking due consideration of:
- human factors engineering;
- integrated system analysis;
- Gateway human system integration requirements;
- concepts of operations;
- maintainability, including on-orbit replaceability;
- system safety design;
- health hazards;
- habitability.
- overseeing and validating the human interface design development and its implementation in the ESA Gateway module design, including functional, informational, environmental, cognitive and physical interfaces across all subsystems;
- coordinating the planning and implementation of ESA Gateway module task analysis, worksite analysis and the definition of human-in-the-loop (HITL) test cases;
- overseeing the design, production and setup of ESA Gateway module physical mock-ups for the development phase;
- conducting maintainability assessments, identifying and resolving the related design implications, and overseeing implementation and validation in the ESA Gateway module design;
- overseeing the industrial preparation and delivery to the NASA Gateway of the Gateway logistics support database (LSAR), including JAXA ECLSS and other CFIs;
- supporting the definition of the ESA Gateway modulesโ commissioning and outfitting plan in liaison with the Gateway operations, system engineering and PA&S teams;
In performing the above tasks, you will be supported by other ESA Gateway team members, the ESA HRE crew office and the Gateway operations team.
In addition to your main duties listed above, you will:
- support the maintenance of the risk register and schedule baselines to support trend analysis aiming to decrease programme risks and long-term costs;
- support the compilation of lessons learned and the identification of synergies in the development of the ESA Gateway modules;
- support the Engineering Control Board (ECB), the Joint Engineering Control Board (JECB), the Change Control Board (CCB), the I-HAB and ERM Control Board, MRBs, TRR/PTRs and other meetings as per the authority delegated by the Baseline, Verification and AIV Team Leader;
- support Prime Contractor Contract Change Notice evaluation and negotiation, in support of the Project Manager, according to the task areas identified above;
- support the configuration manager in the RFD/RFW processing;
- support the system engineering team in the:
- review of industrial specifications and ICDs;
- project system- and subsystem-level reviews (such as PDRs, CDRs and QRs).
- support the PA&S team in the:
- root-cause and extent analyses and contribute to the definition of action plans.
You will also participate in periodic meetings with the parent Division, contributing to the transfer of technical knowledge and lessons learned across the Agency.

Additional requirements
A sound understanding of the specific issues governing human spaceflight projects, and several years of design, verification and validation experience in a project environment.
Knowledge and experience with launch campaigns and on-orbit commissioning preparation activities would be an asset.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
