Work LocationThe Hague, The Netherlands Expected duration3-6 months starting 01 April 2025 Duties and ResponsibilitiesOrganizational Setting and Reporting: The Office of the President of the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (\"Office of the President\" and \"Mechanism\", respectively) invites applications for several legal internships in The Hague, the Netherlands. Potential starting dates range from April to July 2025. The duration of the internship generally ranges from three (3) to six (6) months. The Mechanism is mandated to perform essential functions previously carried out by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. The Office of the President provides legal, judicial, institutional, diplomatic, and administrative support to the President of the Mechanism (\"President\") in the execution of her mandated functions. Responsibilities: Interns in the Office of the President have the opportunity to support the President in a wide range of mandated functions. Responsibilities may include: (i) conducting comprehensive legal research; (ii) assisting in the drafting and proofreading of decisions, orders, and other judicial documents; (iii) assisting in the preparation of reports to the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly; (iv) analyzing relevant laws, rules, and policies; (v) assisting in the drafting of speeches and official correspondence; (vi) providing support in advising on press and policy matters; and (vii) observing court hearings. Interns may also perform routine tasks such as compiling and collating materials and other duties as required. Qualifications/special skillsCandidates must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university law degree programme (at least a bachelorโ€™s degree or equivalent); (b) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate law programme (a second university degree, such as a master's degree or equivalent, or higher). No work experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. However, your training, education, advanced coursework, or skills should contribute to the work of the United Nations during your internship. Previous legal experience is desirable. Applicants must be proficient in standard computer software applications. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the Mechanism. Fluency in oral and written English is required. A working knowledge of French is desirable. A working knowledge of Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian or Kinyarwanda is also desirable.
