Action Against Hunger-USA has over $100 million in programs, and approximately 1,800 permanent staff based in New York City, Washington D.C, Nairobi, and country offices. Summary of Position

The lab technician will be responsible for performing various laboratory tests to support medical diagnoses, surgery, and patient care. He/She will collect and process samples, operate laboratory equipment, analyze data, and maintain accurate records. The lab technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality and reliability of laboratory results and contributes to the overall functioning of the healthcare team.

Purpose

The purpose of the lab technician role is to provide accurate and timely laboratory testing and analysis, aiding in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, monitoring patient health, and supporting medical research. He/She will assist in maintaining a well-functioning laboratory and contribute to the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Engagement

The lab technician will engage in a variety of tasks within the laboratory setting. He/She will receive and process samples, perform laboratory tests, analyze results, maintain laboratory equipment, troubleshoot issues, record data, and collaborate with healthcare professionals to ensure the accuracy and integrity of laboratory findings.

Essential Job Functions

Sample Collection and Processing: Receive, label, and process patient samples following established protocols and safety guidelines. Laboratory Testing: Perform a wide range of laboratory tests, including hematological, biochemical, microbiological, immunological, and molecular tests, using automated equipment and manual techniques. Data Analysis and Interpretation: Analyze laboratory test results, verify accuracy, and interpret findings, ensuring adherence to quality control measures. Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Operate and calibrate laboratory equipment, troubleshoot issues, and perform routine maintenance to ensure accurate and reliable results. Quality Assurance: Follow standard operating procedures to maintain quality assurance and quality control in the laboratory, including proficiency testing, equipment validation, and documentation. Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and comprehensive laboratory records, including test results, procedures performed, and other relevant information. Safety and Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols, infection control measures, and regulatory requirements to maintain a safe and compliant laboratory environment. Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and other laboratory staff, to provide accurate and timely test results, discuss findings, and contribute to patient care.

Requirements

Required Qualifications and Professional Experience:

Bachelor degree or equivalent qualification in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related field. Minimum of 5 years of experience working in a clinical laboratory or healthcare setting.

 

Required Skills, Competencies & Attributes:

Strong knowledge of laboratory techniques, methodologies, and equipment operation. Proficiency in performing a variety of laboratory tests and procedures. Attention to detail and accuracy in sample handling, preparation, and testing. Analytical and problem-solving skills to interpret and troubleshoot laboratory results. Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and data management. Effective communication skills to collaborate with healthcare professionals. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. Commitment to quality, safety, and adherence to ethical standards. Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks. Continuous learning mindset to stay updated with advancements in laboratory technology and practices.
