Summary of Position

The lab assistants will be responsible for providing support to laboratory technician by assisting with various tasks related to sample handling, equipment maintenance, data entry, and general laboratory maintenance. They work under the supervision of laboratory staff and contribute to the efficient and effective functioning of the laboratory.

Purpose

The purpose of the lab assistant role is to support laboratory operations by performing essential tasks that contribute to the overall functioning and productivity of the laboratory. Lab assistants assist with sample preparation, equipment maintenance, data entry, and other routine laboratory activities. Their role ensures that laboratory processes run smoothly, samples are handled appropriately, and data is accurately recorded.

Engagement

Lab assistants will engage in a range of activities to fulfill their role in laboratory operations. They collaborate with laboratory staff to handle and process samples, perform routine laboratory tests, maintain laboratory equipment and supplies, record and organize data, and contribute to maintaining a clean and safe laboratory environment.

Essential Job Functions

Sample Handling: Receive, label, and prepare samples for analysis following established protocols. Ensure proper storage and disposal of samples as required. Equipment Maintenance: Assist with the cleaning, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Report any equipment malfunctions or issues to the appropriate personnel. Data Entry: Accurately enter and record data generated from laboratory tests and experiments into computer systems or laboratory databases. Maintain documentation of experimental procedures and results. Laboratory Tests and Procedures: Assist laboratory staff in performing routine tests and procedures under their supervision. Follow standard operating procedures and safety protocols. Inventory Management: Assist in maintaining inventory levels of laboratory supplies, reagents, and chemicals. Prepare and organize supplies for laboratory experiments and tests. Quality Control: Follow established quality control procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability of laboratory results. Participate in quality assurance activities as directed. Safety and Cleanliness: Adhere to laboratory safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment. Dispose of hazardous materials according to established guidelines. Collaboration: Collaborate with laboratory staff and other team members to ensure smooth workflow and effective communication within the laboratory.

Requirements

Required Qualifications and Professional Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent. Additional certification or coursework in laboratory science or a related field is preferred. Previous experience working in a laboratory or healthcare setting is desirable.

Required Skills, Competencies & Attributes:

Basic understanding of laboratory procedures, safety protocols, and equipment usage. Attention to detail and accuracy in handling samples, recording data, and following protocols. Basic computer skills, including data entry and proficiency in using laboratory information systems or software. Good organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow instructions from laboratory staff. Strong communication skills to interact professionally with laboratory staff and other team members. Flexibility and adaptability to changing laboratory needs and priorities. Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and adhering to ethical standards. Physical stamina and dexterity to perform repetitive tasks and handle laboratory equipment. Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and willingness to comply with safety regulations.
