5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Result of ServiceTo archive all UNECA official and technical documents in standard digital formats. Work LocationKnowledge Management Services Section Expected duration2 Months Duties and ResponsibilitiesBackground The ECA Institutional Repository project was implemented in 2009 to provide a framework to systematically collect, manage, preserve and disseminate the technical publication of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. The Project has diverse ongoing activities including digitization, cataloging of publications, batch imports, IR platform enhancements to mention a few. The project is mainly managed by KSS but given its institutional nature has participation from various sections, Divisions and Sub Regional offices. The first phase of the project was completed in 2011 and the second phase of sustaining the growth of the repository and completing the planned activities and consolidating the service has since started. Despite the success of the ECA IR in managing and making available all the technical information resources published at ECA, not all types of information materials have been included. Notably, the information resources from the External Communications and Media activities which equally provide relevant information on ECA programmes and activities are currently not systematically organized nor are they accessible to users. With this in view, the ECA IR provides a means that can be used to organize, manage and disseminate these information resources. To this end, the ECA IR multimedia project will be implemented to provide a framework to systematically collect, manage, preserve and disseminate all information resources related to media activities, including photographs, videos, films, audio records, etc. Individual Contractor with library and information management skills is therefore required to collect, catalogue, archive and digitize (as required) all the Communications and Media information resources. Under the overall guidance of the Chief of KMSS and the direct supervision of the Project Manager, the successful candidates will: - review, and select existing multimedia information objects including videos, speeches, photographs, press releases on ECA activities for archiving; - create inventories of the multimedia information objects according to the physical format; - perform complete an accurate descriptive cataloging of the Multimedia information objects using identified cataloging standards into the ECA Repository with all the required metadata fields; - assign a Classification number to facilitate identification and retrieval of the physical versions from the shelves/archives; - perform quality control on all repository records by checking for typographical errors and correctness; - upload and link complementary full text files (in selected appropriate format) for each of the metadata records; - scan all the appropriate multimedia information objects such as photos, ECA press releases and save them using a standardized file naming system; - convert all file formats into the appropriate archival formats; and perform any other duties assigned by the project manager.
