This position is located in the Strategic Management Unit (SMU) of the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA). OSAA is mandated to provide advisory, advocacy, coordination and monitoring services supporting Africa’s development. More information about the Office can be found at www.un.org/osaa.
The internship is unpaid with a minimum duration of two (2) months, with an opportunity for extension depending on the needs of the Office. The internship is designed to be in person and full-time. Depending on the situation of the successful candidates, the internship may also offer a Flexible Work Arrangement to be conducted fully remote, and hybrid (in-person and remote).
Full time Interns work five (5) days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member of the communications team in OSAA’s SMU.
Responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
• Support in the maintenance of OSAA’s content calendar
• Support in the collection of strategic communication materials from various sources
• Support in the maintenance of Trello boards for OSAA events and/or campaigns
• Support in the organization of OSAA events, including hybrid and in-person
• Support in the creation/maintenance of distribution lists for media and products outreach
• Support in the coordination of meetings with partners to advance OSAA’s advocacy agenda
• Support in the production of data visualizations for OSAA knowledge products
• Support in the design of event flyers, social media assets and PowerPoint presentations
• Support in the creation of desktop publishing assets for OSAA knowledge products
WEBSITE CONTENT MANAGEMENT
• Support in the maintenance of the information architecture on the OSAA website
• Support in the creation, curation and posting of multimedia content for OSAA’s website
• Support in the enhancement of the language versions of the OSAA website
• Support in the creation of multimedia content for OSAA’s official social media accounts
• Support in the monitoring of social media trends related to OSAA’s priorities
• Support in the titling and/or subtitling of short videos used on OSAA’s social media
MONITORING & EVALUATION (M&E)
• Support in the compilation of analytics data from OSAA’s website and social media account
• Support in the collection of data from various OSAA surveys
• Support in the testing and research for tools to boost OSAA’s M&E capacity
More generally, interns shall:
1. Observe all applicable rules, regulations, instructions, procedures and directives of the Organization notwithstanding their status as described in section 4 of the UN Internship Programme Administrative Instructions ST/AI/2000/9 & ST/AI/2005/11;
2. Provide the receiving departments/offices with a copy of all materials prepared by them during the internship. The UN shall be entitled to all property rights, including but not limited to patents, copyrights and trademarks, with regard to material which bears a direct relation to, or is made in consequence of, the services provided under the internship. At the request of the UN, the interns shall assist in securing such property rights and transferring them to the UN in compliance with the requirements of the applicable law;
4. Respect the impartiality and independence required of the UN and of the receiving department/office and shall not seek or accept instructions regarding the services performed under the internship agreement from any Government or from any authority external to the UN;
5. Unless otherwise authorized by the appropriate official in the receiving department/office, they may not communicate at any time to the media or to any institution, person, Government or any other external source any information which has become known to them by reason of their association with the UN or the receiving department/office, that they know or ought to have known has not been made public. They may not use any such information without the written authorization of the appropriate official, and such information may never be used for personal gain. These obligations also apply after the end of the internship with the UN; and
6. Refrain from any conduct that would adversely reflect on the UN or on the receiving department/office and will not engage in any activity which is incompatible with the aims and objectives of the UN.

To qualify for the United Nations Headquarters Secretariat Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
a) Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher such as Master’s degree or equivalent, Ph.D. or postgraduate degree);
b) Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
(c) subject to review on a case-by-case basis, applicants within a few years from graduation who could not apply earlier and who are in an early stage of their careers; as a first time entry into the workforce; are changing careers or due to compelling family circumstances.
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Computer literaacy in standard software applications is required

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; and knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

REMOTE INTERNSHIPS (COVID-19):
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship¿remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.
G-4 VISAS FOR INTERNS:
All interns assigned to a UN Organization, including Funds and Programmes, at a United States based duty station, who are not United States citizens or United States legal permanent residents (LPR) will be required to obtain G-4 visas prior to travelling to the United States.
Prospective interns who are already in the United States in another nonimmigrant status may need to apply for a change of status to G-4 prior to joining the United Nations for an internship. It should be emphasized that prospective interns are responsible for ensuring that they have an appropriate valid visa and employment authorization allowing them to undertake the internship.
If the applicant is in F-1 status and has a valid EAD, they may undertake an internship within the scope of their F-1 visa without seeking a change of visa status. Please note, however, that interns in F-1 status who wish to undertake an internship following completion of their academic programme as part of Optional Practical Training (OPT) ‘may’ need to seek a change of visa status to G-4 (This process currently takes about 8-10 weeks) or obtain G-4 visa overseas.
To qualify for G-4 nonimmigrant status, interns must be serving essentially full-time, i.e. 35 + hours per week.
United Nations Considerations
According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.
