The internship with the Human Security Unit, located in New York, is for a duration of three months. Depending on the needs of the unit and upon satisfactory performance of the intern, there is a possibility for an extension for another three months. The total duration of the entire internship period is six months at maximum. Under no circumstances will there be extension beyond six months. The internship is UNPAID and full time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the unit to which they are assigned.
The intern will assist the Human Security Unit (HSU) in providing support to programme management, undertaking outreach activities and providing substantive and logistical support as required in line with the Unit’s strategic objectives and workplan. The HSU and the UN Trust Fund for Human Security (UNTFHS) work across and at the intersection of major global agendas to support the UN system in addressing complex challenges in diverse contexts through people-centred, comprehensive, context-specific and preventive strategies. Some of the areas of focus include: inequalities in treatment and persistent poverty, supporting the most vulnerable, prevention of crises, the multidimensional consequences of climate change and disasters, urban violence, and migration, among others.
Tasks include the following:
• Assist staff in conducting research, analyzing and presenting information gathered from diverse sources; prepare various written outputs, draft background papers for the Unit; analyze sections of reports and studies, provide inputs to publications and statements, as well as participate at meetings and teleconferences when required.
• Provide support in the provision of content and maintenance of the HSU website, social media and the Human Security Newsletter, and assist in the preparation of ad hoc and quarterly reports.
• Undertake outreach activities; assist in developing advocacy and communication strategies that increase awareness on the added value of the human security concept among UN and non-UN counterparts, including the Advisory Board on Human Security.
• Provide substantive and logistical support to participation and organization of meetings and teleconferences including supporting the identification of participants and preparation of background and logistical documents and minutes.
Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match the audience; and, demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others' ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position; and, shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.
Client Orientation: Considers all those to whom services are provided to be "clients" and seeks to see things from clients' point of view; establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect; identifies clients' needs and matches them to appropriate solutions; monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients' environment to keep informed and anticipate problems; keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects; and meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.
Planning & Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; and uses time efficiently.
Creativity: Actively seeks to improve programmes or services; offers new and different options to solve problems or meet client needs; promotes and persuades others to consider new ideas; takes calculated risks on new and unusual ideas; thinks "outside the box"; takes an interest in new ideas and new ways of doing things; and, is not bound by current thinking or traditional approaches.
A university degree in international development, political science, economics, international relations or related field.
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or
c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is desirable. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a nonimmigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship.

United Nations Considerations
According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
