The internship in the (Population and Development Area, Population Division, ECLAC SANTIAGO) will last 3 months, depending on the needs of the Office. Candidates may be selected throughout the posting period, on an "as-needed" basis.

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background and the internship period. Duties may include:
This position considers activities within the framework of the analysis of some census information, including but not limited to:
1. Review geographic information systems tools to enhance the existing indicators for the SDG, considering the REDATAM use and integration.
2. Propose SDG indicators that account for the coverage of basic needs of the population including access to water (SDG 6) and energy (SDG 7), using sources of information like sensus, surveys, etc.
3. Review river basin as a unit of geo-referential analysis, for the application of indicators related to the 2030 agenda.
4. Act as tester user in the creation of interactive maps, using the new Redatam Web Maps functionality, mainly with indicators related to access to water (SDG 6) and energy (SDG 7).
5. Assist the integration of REDATAM Web Maps with the related tables and graphics.

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
- Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.
- For this internship, studies in the area of geography and geographic information systems are required.
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
For this internship, experience in use of computational tool REDATAM and familiarity with socio-demographic indicators is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
Fluency in Spanish is required. Knowledge of English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language would be an asset.

Interns are expected to work on a full-time basis (work five days per week; 35 hours) in the Division/Section to which they are assigned, but they may undertake flexible working arrangements, subject to certain conditions.
The internship is UNPAID. All costs of travel and accommodation, including living expenses, must be covered by the intern or any relevant sponsoring institution.
Interns shall not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, positions at the professional level and above for a period of six months following the end of their internship.

United Nations Considerations
According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
