The internship can be conducted on remote. The intern selected will be working for the Office of the United Nations for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) in the Department of Political Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat. Established in 2002, UNOWAS has the responsibility in the area of preventive diplomacy, good offices and political mediation and facilitation efforts in West Africa and the Sahel. UNOWAS also works to consolidate peace and democratic governance in countries emerging from conflict or political crises.
UNOWAS works closely with the African Union, ECOWAS, the Mano River Union, the Lake Chad Basin Commission, the Gulf of Guinea Commission, the G5 Sahel, as well as other regional partners to support regional solutions to cross-cutting threats to peace and security, such as terrorism and violent extremism, transnational organized crime, piracy, and maritime insecurity.
UNOWAS assists regional institutions and member states to enhance their capacities to promote good governance and respect for the rule of law, human rights, and the mainstreaming of gender in conflict prevention.
Through high level political advocacy, UNOWAS supports the implementation of the United Nations Integrated Strategy for the Sahel, endorsed by the Security Council in June 2013. The strategy includes a range of programs and initiatives in the areas of Governance, Security and Resilience.
The internship will last a maximum of 6 months.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five (5) days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member to which they are assigned.
Duties of the intern include, but are not limited to:
- Conducts research and drafts analytical reports, notes, and other documents related to priorities of UNOWAS, notably in the framework of its research and analysis initiatives;
- Conducts desk reviews and drafts literature review;
- Assists with the organization of workshops and conferences;
- Assists on note taking during consultations and interviews;
- Attends conferences and meetings of interest to UNOWAS, and provides verbal and written briefing notes to colleagues;
- Supports the office's engagement with relevant interlocutors and partners;
- Contributes to the team's day-to-day tasks as needed, including administration and communications matters;
- Performs other duties as requested by the supervisor.

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
Interested candidates must be pursuing or pursued their degree in areas related to this Job Opening.
In addition, interested candidates must:
- Be computer literate in standard software applications including MS Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point);
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and,
- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required and knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage

Due to COVID-19 restrictions on travel, it may not be possible for applicants who are not based in Thailand to obtain a visa for and travel to Bangkok. In such an eventuality, a telecommuting arrangement could be worked out. Thailand-based applicants may also be asked to work remotely depending on regulations governing UN premises in Bangkok. Applicants must be willing and prepared to work remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.
United Nations Considerations

Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
