Location Frascati

Our team and mission

This position is based at the ESA Centre for Earth Observation (ESRIN) - Frascati, Italy

In the Space Transportation Directorate, Space Rider team, part of the VEGA & Space Rider Integrated Project Team located in ESRIN, has the main objective to develop a reusable orbital customizable/standardized system for multiple commercial and institutional applications (microgravity, In-Orbit Validation and Demonstration for Earth observation, science, robotic exploration) able to perform in-orbit payloads operations, de-orbit, re-enter, land on ground and be relaunched after limited refurbishment โ€“ this with the final aim to contribute in the transition from an โ€œaccess to spaceโ€ concept to an integrated โ€œLow-Earth-orbit Space logisticโ€ concept.

Field(s) of activity for the internship

Topic: Space Rider system analyses for multi body design and payload service optimization

In the frame of Space Rider Programme, one of the main objectives and challenges of the programme is to commercialize a novel service for a variety of commercial and institutional space and non-space applications. To support this objective, two main activities are identified:

1) Preliminary analysis of multi-body dynamics for study of Close-Proximity Operations with Space Rider: study of literature references, support to definition of Space Rider system requirements and guidelines matching Space Rider constraints, identification of possible interface standards and relative Technology Readiness Levels, preparation of preliminary algorithm for multi-body dynamics and related reporting, participation to technical meetings.

2) Definition and implementation of a tool for Space Rider Payload Aggregate feasibility studies: To define a calculation tool to check coherence of a Space Rider Payload Aggregate composition and related mission timeline with respect to Space Rider cargo bay available resources budgets along all mission phases. To perform a study case utilizing the tool to determine the feasibility of alternative payload aggregates.
