Org. Setting and Reporting

This internship is located within the Conference Management Services (CMS), Administrative Services Division (ASD) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA - unescwa.org). The intern reports directly to Chief, CMS and will be under the overall supervision of the Director of ASD.

The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full-time basis - this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months. The internship certificate is awarded on the recommendation of the supervisor.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. The United Nations accepts no responsibility for the medical insurance of the intern or costs arising from injury, illness or death that may occur during an internship. Applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical insurance coverage to cover the full period of the internship at the duty station and provide a medical certificate of good health prior to the commencement of the internship. The United Nations accepts no responsibility for loss or damage to personal effects that may occur during the internship. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

The intern will be responsible for carrying out the following:

1 - Performs desktop publishing to produce a variety of print material and publications, using relevant computer systems and software applications.
2 - Assists in the layout and preparation of information materials.
3 - Reviews and/or edits scripts and story-lines to understand, creates and edits animations as per requirements and prepares presentations with raw designs to clients, using relevant software and techniques.
4 - Creates models, drawings and illustrations by hand or electronically.
5 - Develops storyboards for the initial stages of production, using creativity and artistic techniques to tell a story or provide information in visual form.
6 - Joins images with background graphics and special effects and ensures synchronization of frames and audio
7 - Assists with scheduling of various components of the production process, e.g. copy and proofreading, graphics, translation services, typesetting, printing, etc.).
8 - Liaises with relevant parties on project specifications and approval of mechanicals for dispatch, etc.
9 - Tracks and monitors production flow to ensure that deadlines are met.
10 - Performs other related work as required., including drawing paintings, computer animation, info-graphic and printmaking design, books illustrations, creative writing, technical art, installations and photography.

Education

•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
•Be computer literate in standard software applications, in particular Microsoft Word and Excel;
•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the internship programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English and Arabic is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
