Organizational Context The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the worldโ€™s largest humanitarian organization, with a network of 191-member National Societies (NSs). The Strategic Planning Department (SPD) is part of the Office of the Secretary General, ensuring its support in providing the overall strategic direction to the organisation, facilitating collective decision-making, monitoring progress, evaluating results, strengthening strategic planning and quality of the networks' programming efforts. The intern, Evaluations, is part of the SPD team and will be based in Geneva, Switzerland.
Job Purpose

We are seeking a highly motivated, creative and skilled intern who can help us support RBMโ€™s work on evaluations as outlined in the job description below. The intern will have an opportunity to further support the unitโ€™s efforts to manage and carry out quality evaluations, whilst at the same exploring innovative methods in evaluations. Work in enhancing the look and feel of evaluation tools, the databank and reports as well as promoting the utilization of these resources. This position will provide an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in this area of work.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Evaluation is an important function that allows organizations to assess what works and what doesnโ€™t in both emergency operations and in long-term programmes. It can be used to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of interventions, guide and influence programme design and implementation, drive innovation and ensure that limited organizational resources are utilized in an efficient manner. The Evaluation intern will have the following duties:

  1. Assist with designing and improving current existing evaluation tools, templates and guidance for both emergency and long-term programmes.
  2. Assist with the current efforts being made to actualize and update the Evaluation Framework, and systems supporting it, such as the IFRC Evaluation Databank.
  3. Support data collection efforts in evaluations, including surveys, interviews and focus group discussions.
  4. Use appropriate statistical software and tools to analyse quantitative and qualitative data coming out of evaluations.
  5. Innovate, propose and design data visualization approaches to improve the look and feel of evaluation tools, the databank and reports.
  6. Collaborate with other departments and stakeholders to support them on their evaluative This may involve assisting in communication efforts, gathering feedback, and contributing ideas in support of IFRCโ€™s Evaluation Framework.
  7. Stay informed about the latest developments and trends in evaluations. This may involve conducting research, reading relevant literature, and sharing relevant insights or resources with the Coordinator and the team.
  8. Undertake additional tasks as assigned: As an intern, you may be assigned additional tasks to support IFRCโ€™s overall Evaluation Framework.

    While supporting the coordinator, the intern will have the opportunity to learn and contribute to various aspects of evaluations and research, while gaining hands-on experience.

    Education

    Required

  12. Be currently enrolled in a university or equivalent level, or have graduated recently (normally within 1 year from the date of hiring) in an area that is compatible with the IFRC activities.

  13. Master's degree in applied data science, statistics, international development or a related discipline.

  15. Familiar with the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement and/or international and development work.
    Knowledge, Skills and Languages

    Required

  16. Fluently spoken and written English.
Good knowledge and understanding of evidence collection methods, including for both qualitative and quantitative data collection. Proficiency in querying and manipulating raw datasets for analysis using appropriate tools, such as Excel, NVivo, Atlas, SPSS, Stata, Python and R. Proficient in data visualization software such as Excel, Tableau and Power BI. Highly developed research, reporting and analytical skills.

Preferred

Good command of another IFRC official language (French, Spanish or Arabic). Experience in using AI powered tools. Knowledge about the humanitarian sector and disaster management. Good communication skills in different formats, capable of communicating complex ideas in simple, direct ways to different audiences, including understanding and using data visualisation. Ability to work on own initiative and solve problems. Demonstrated experience working in cross-cultural contexts and with multiple stakeholders.
