Org. Setting and Reporting
The Trade, Investment and Innovation Division, Office of the Division Director internship is for a minimum of two months. Given the nature of work and the training given, it is preferable if candidates could organize their internship for at least 3 months, up to a maximum of 6 months. All supervisory staff have PhDs in Economics, and historically this internship attracted very high caliber candidates, who as part of this internship gained invaluable academic and applied skills.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the division or office to which they are assigned. Office of the Division Director is a busy and dynamic team within ESCAP. The Division is involved in a wide variety of work which includes: research and analysis on issues related to trade, regional integration and development; providing training and capacity building on trade policy for policymakers and researchers; delivering advisory services to member governments on aspects of trade policy, including trade negotiations; organizing regional dialogues,
meetings and fora. Much of our work is focused on the development needs of the region's least developed countries and other countries with special needs.
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background and the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Background research, literature reviews and drafting inputs on trade and trade-related issues (such as inclusive and sustainable development linkages to trade), including contributions to TIID publications, especially ESCAP Trade Insights and statements of senior officials
- Support for the Asia-Pacific Research and Training Network (ARTNeT), including work to improve research dissemination by various channels (e.g. social media, webpage)
- Conduct statistical analyses of data related to regional economic cooperation and integration; - Data analysis on trade and FDI flows, tariffs, non-tariff measures trends and other trade,
investment and innovation relevant indicators
- Support for section events, including through the website and social media
- Logistical support for training events, conferences and meetings
- Other tasks as required by the work programme
- Present on the work undertaken during internship, or on related research work, at an internal brown bag seminar.
Communication: Ability to draft clearly and concisely, good written and oral command of English.
Teamwork: Good interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from different national and cultural backgrounds to achieve organizational goals.
Client Orientation: Considers all those to whom services are provided to be ‘client’ and seeks to see things from clients’ point of view.
Planning & Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies and identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required.
Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
(c) have graduated with a university degree (first university degree, or second university degree or equivalent, or higher) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme, and 1) shall be computer literate in standard software applications; 2) have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; 3) have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views; and 4) familiar with quantitative analysis will be an advantage.Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
REMOTE INTERNSHIPS (COVID-19): In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
