The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all (www.unhabitat.org).
The position is located at the Communications and Media Section in the External Relations and Partnerships Branch of the External Relations, Strategy, Knowledge and Innovation Division (ERSKI) of UN-Habitat in Nairobi. ERSKI is responsible for strategic planning, programmatic direction and operationalization of UN-Habitat's focal point role for the New Urban Agenda in the UN system and for coordination of Emergency Programmes. The External Relations and Partnerships Branch is responsible for the development and promulgation of coherent organizational messages that are closely aligned with the strategic priorities, the development and monitoring of the integrated resource mobilization strategy and the management of the resource allocation.
The Communications & Media Section is responsible for promoting UN-Habitat as a centre of excellence and innovation, the thought leader and go-to in the context of the 2030 Agenda, New Urban Agenda (NUA) and UN-Habitat's Strategic Plan; to develop content for effective communication on priority trends in the NUA and urban development aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals, campaigns, launches, and events for wide variety of platforms and audiences; to develop policy on the coordination of corporate and project communications/events and to implement them and to develop and manage corporate branding, websites and exhibitions. The intern will be under the supervision of the Chief of Communication Section, UN-Habitat, ERSKI, Communications and Media Section.
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), External Relations and Partnerships Branch of the External Relations, Strategy, Knowledge and Innovation Division (ERSKI), Communications and Media Section internship is for six (6) months.
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Communication, the intern will:
- Support the Chief of Communication to review, record, distribute and/or process e-mail, hard copy correspondence and other documents; follow-up on impending actions.
- Assist in monitoring processes and schedules related the Chief of Communication Section’s work plan and calendar; where applicable, assist in the verification of receipt and accuracy of requisite documents, approvals, etc.
- Provide secretarial, administrative and logistics support to meetings, boards, committees, conferences; Assist in planning and organization of meetings and presentations.
- Respond or draft responses to routine correspondence and other communications.
- Take minutes of meetings, boards or important committees.
- Support in development of presentations or briefing notes as requested by the Chief of Communication Section.
- Perform any other tasks as may be assigned from time to time by the team. Competencies

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent
Be computer literate in standard software applications such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
Have strong drafting skills in English.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred areas of studies:
Journalism, Communications, Digital Media, Marketing, and International Relations or related fields.
